Background on Darrion Trammell:
Hailing from Marin City, California, today’s Aztec Alumni Spotlight falls on former SDSU men’s basketball player Darrion Trammell. Darion played four years at St. Ignatius Preparatory in San Francisco. In 2022, Trammell’s high school coach, Rob Marcaletti, told EVT,
“(Trammell has) a cerebral high IQ, a true point guard, and an extension of a coach on the floor,” Marcaletti told EVT. “His defensive mindset sets the tone for the rest of his game. His D quickly turns to O with his ability to get downhill and put immediate pressure on the defense. He really changed his game his sophomore year in high school when he started to figure out angles and how to use his body to get to the free-throw line.”
Accroding to the San Francisco Standard, “Over three years as a starter at St. Ignatius, Trammell’s teams went 58-28, and he showed his penchant for stepping up in big games with a 4-2 record against Sacred Heart Cathedral and perfect 6-0 mark against Riordan, constantly knocking down clutch free throws to close out tight wins.” After high school, he wasn’t recruited due to his size. He played for one year at City College of San Francisco, leading them to a state championship, before heading to Seattle University.
Seattle U:
Trammell enrolled initially at Seattle University and played there for two years before entering the transfer portal. During his time at Seattle University, he averaged 18.9 points, 2.2 steals, and 5.2 assists per game over his two seasons.

In the 2021-22 season, Trammell helped lead the Red Hawks to a terrific 23-9 record, though they lost in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament against Abilene Christian. Leaving Seattle U, Trammell was No. 1 in assists, No. 1 in assists per game, No. 1 in steals, No. 1 in steals per game, No. 2 in free throws, and No. 3 in free throw attempts in the WAC.
San Diego State:
Darrion Trammell came over from Seattle U expecting to be a scorer. In his two years on the Mesa, his scoring dipped from his time in Seattle. Even his assist numbers dropped while with the Aztecs. But sometimes, there are intangible aspects to a player’s game that aren’t reflected in the stats. Trammell played a pivotal role in the championship game run during the 2022-23 season. He had the game-sealing free throws in the Elite 8 against Creighton that sent the Aztecs to the Final Four. Also in that year, he took home the NCAA South Regional Most Outstanding Player award. He also helped lead the Aztecs to another Sweet 16 appearance in the 2023-24 season. Completed his college career with 1,654 points, nationally No. 167 among active players, No. 53 in total assists (503), and No. 30 in steals (216).
Pro Career:
Trammell is playing for Kometa Kaposvari KK in the Hungarian League. He signed with the Hungarian professional basketball team in July of 2024, according to the team’s Instagram. The team is based in Kaposvár, Hungary. The team plays in the Nemzeti Bajnokság, founded in 1960. Trammell is the only American on the team and the only non-Hungarian.
In 2025, the team won first place in the Red Division with a record of 20-4. OM Kometa Kaposvari, Trammell is averaging 18.8 points, 3.3 steals, and 4.7 assists. According to EuroBasket.com, Trammell’s outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Year, Finals MVP, Import Player of the Year, and Guard of the Year awards. Trammell’s contributions helped his team achieve the best record in the league and secure the championship title. He also received individual accolades like being named to the First Team, Imports Team, and Defensive Team.
Trammell’s scoring ability, averaging nearly 19 points per game, was crucial in his team’s success throughout the season. Darrion’s team ended the season on a 10-game winning streak en route to the league title. Trammell has found great success this past season in Hungary, and it will be interesting to see what he does in the offseason. After winning a championship with Kometa Kaposvari, Trammell will most likely stay another season with the team.
