EVT Sports

We are proud to introduce the 10,000 article in the history of East Village Times.

In this piece, we will highlight the first 9 1/2 years of the site.

It is hard to believe.

We have created 10,000 articles on San Diego sports.

The site is credentialed throughout San Diego, holding credentials for each franchise at some point in our journey. Even for the San Diego Padres, in which the EVT team sent a few writers into the clubhouse in Peoria and at Petco Park a number of times. We have also held credentials for ten years in the Padres minor league system.

With Paul Garrison and Andre Haghverdian at the lead, our SDSU coverage is arguably the best in the area.

We are the only local media group that consistently travels to cover the Aztecs football team on the road. We were at the Final 4 and the Championship game for Aztecs men’s basketball a few years ago. Full steam ahead for our Aztecs coverage. It will only get better.

Francisco Velasco has been with the site since its infancy and covers soccer in the area. His relationship with the Xolos is unique as East Village Times is the only English-producing media outlet covering the Tijuana Xolos, and we have done it for close to ten years. We also cover the Wave and have done so since the franchise first developed.

San Diego FC is coming and EVT will be front and center. It is an exciting time for soccer in the area. The sport is growing, and we will be at every local event.

In recent years, we have developed a photography department led by Don De Mars. This unit works constantly in the area and provides the site with original photos and videos. These local men and women work hard on their craft, and EVT is blessed to have them on our side. There is no end in sight for what EVT can produce.

Our personal success stories from the site are plentiful as several former writers and content producers work for ESPN, Fox Sports, minor league baseball, and other outlets. While other former writers are now entrenched in several different major league club front offices. EVT is out there. We are represented all over sports. This is just the beginning.

Individuals like Nick Lee, Dominic Stearn, Diego Garcia, and Chris Spiering are instrumental in the success of the current site. Without men like them, none of this would be possible. So many more have come and gone who put in so much to make things possible for the EVT family. Jason, Ryan, Patrick, Matt, Diane, Al, Evan, Austin, Conrad, Luke, Deegs, Sam… Thank you all. If I forgot to mention you. I apologize. There really are so many members of the EVT family.

We are excited for our future.

I'd like this amount to

The personal story behind EVT

As I struggled with my son’s death, I knew I needed an outlet.

Things were not going well eternally, and something had to give. I am not a quitter. I refuse to give in. But life was becoming difficult. I just could not move forward.

I stumbled into writing, as I always had the ability to communicate. Even at an early age, I showed a great ability to create content. With no expectations, I started producing work about the San Diego Padres in December 2014 for Fansided, a subsidiary of Sports Illustrated. By February, I was named editor of the site. The site reached its highest level of views during my first month on the job. As March rolled around, I knew this was the calling I needed for my son. I knew I needed to create my own site.

So, I did.

On April 5, 2015, East Village Times was launched with absolutely no website development experience. The name was coined as the Chargers were poised to potentially move into the area and play right next to Petco Park. It seemed like an appropriate name as the other side of Petco Park was at its early stages in terms of revitalization.

Our first few years were spent covering the Padres, Aztecs, and Chargers.

We struggled. It was difficult. I had to learn on the job. With the help of dozens and dozens of writers (most of whom I have, unfortunately, lost touch with), East Village Times began its growth.

Today, our content creators are on the radio, podcasting, YouTubing, and growing sports in our area. That is our goal.

To continue to make San Diego Sports relevant.

Thank you for taking this journey with us.

The following is a small example of our work. We invite you to take a look.
