The San Diego State Softball team needed to win the three-game series to lock up a bye in the upcoming week’s Mountain West Tournament.

The Aztecs did just that and then some, sweeping the Spartans to end the regular season for the Aztecs.

SDSU won each game by one run: the first game, 2-1, the second game, 4-3, and finally, the last game, 5-4. San Diego State sent the six seniors off with an absolute banger of a Senior Day game finish. Due to winning and sweeping the Spartans, the Aztecs locked up the two seed in this week’s Mountain West Tournament.

In game one, Coach Nuveman Deniz started her ace, Cece Cellura, who pitched another gem for the Aztecs. She went six innings, giving up four hits and one earned run while striking out seven Spartans, a career high.

Neither team could really do anything offensively. The Aztecs only had three hits in the contest compared to the Spartans’ four. The Aztecs scored the first run thanks to a sacrifice fly by Angie Yellen to score Julie Holcomb. Cellura then gave up an unearned run after a single in the fourth. In the sixth inning, Mia Rodriguez came around to score after an error by the first baseman on a Bella Espinoza ground ball. Grace Uribe entered in the seventh and shut the door for a 2-1 Aztec win.

In game two, Uribe started in the circle and continued to pitch well for the Aztecs. She went four innings, giving up a solo home run as her lone run.

Dee Dee Hernandez, the crafty left-hander, came on in the fifth and gave up two unearned runs to the Spartans while also walking a pair of batters. Cellura would then take over, going two innings to give the Aztecs the 4-3 win over the Spartans.

The Aztecs would take advantage early, going up 3-0 after three innings. Then the Spartans answered with a quick three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score. In typical Shannon Cunningham fashion, she would hit the decider in the game with a solo home run to right field in the sixth.

The Aztecs, in game three, would go to the crafty left-handed senior out of La Crescenta, California, to start the game for her last regular season appearance as an Aztec. Hernandez went three innings, giving up just one hit, with that one being a solo home run.

The Aztecs opened the game up 2-0, before the Spartans answered big. After getting behind, the Spartans went up 4-2 on the Aztecs, getting three runs off the senior Texas A&M transfer Uribe. After going 1.2 innings, Uribe was then relieved by Cellura to try to slow down the Spartans.

The Aztecs needed an answer, and Uribe did just that in the sixth with the bat, ripping a double down the line to plate Rodriguez. Down 4-3 heading into the bottom half of the seventh, the Aztecs needed to come up big.

Jazmin Williams ripped a double down the left field line, putting herself in scoring position. Angie Yellen brought her in with a single, then with Kate Farren pinch running and advancing to second. Cali Decker, one of the senior leaders on the squad, walked it off for a 5-4 Aztec win and a memorable Senior Day moment for all Aztec seniors.

San Diego State Softball had an amazing regular season, with many ups and downs.

Now it is time for the Aztecs to do what most people predicted to start the year: win the Mountain West Tournament on its home field.

The Aztecs’ journey to a Mountain West Tournament title starts at 6 p.m. PT on Thursday, May 8. They will face the winner of the No. 3/6 game (Fresno State and San Jose State). If the Aztecs win Thursday, they will likely play Friday in the Semifinal against the one-seed Nevada Wolfpack for a spot in the championship game.
