Petco Park – San Diego

The San Diego Padres completed the finale of their four-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Petco Park on Sunday Morning.

Not included in the series finale was Fernando Tatis Jr., who got a much-needed off day. In the series, Tatis went 2-11; it’s clear he probably needed some rest.

Without their main leadoff man, the natural choice was Luis Rengifo, who’s proven to be an offensive difference-maker. So far in the series, he’s 3-8.

That being said, the Padres wouldn’t score until the second inning. A two-run shot from Jackson Merrill scored himself and Ty France.

However, that was not the end of the Padres’ offense. Landen Roupp continued to struggle, walking three Padres batters and loading the bases. With Jake Cronenworth at the plate, he landed a single past Willy Adames, sending two runners home, putting the Padres ahead 4-0.

On the Padres’ pitching side of things, Kyle Hart opened the game for the Pads. The Padres X account announced Michael King got the nod for the far more important upcoming series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

LHP Kyle Hart will start today against the San Francisco Giants.

RHP Michael King will start tomorrow in Arizona.

Against the Giants, Hart went three scoreless frames, striking out two and allowing one hit. A very strong start for JP Sears, the bulk pitcher to build off of.

Sears found himself in a similar bases-loaded jam with 1 out. The Giants managed to sneak out two runs as a result.

Following Sears was Griffin Canning. The Padres’ pitching chaos strategy, while certainly not flashy, has worked relatively well. Padres pitching hasn’t really been nails all year, but they’ve done the bare minimum to have an above .500 record. It certainly helps that the offensive output is back up.

The Giants scored again in the fifth when Osleivis Basabe crushed a solo homer. Basabe, this series proved to be a thorn in the Padres’ side; of course, the finale was no different.

However, the Padres would respond with a run of their own thanks to the combined efforts of Luis Campusano and France.

The Giants fired back once more in the eighth with another solo shot, this time from Rafael Devers.

All scoring stopped there, and Adrian Morejon closed out Sunday’s game to minimal fanfare.

The Padres head to Arizona to play the aforementioned Diamondbacks in a three-game series at Chase Field.

Michael King (6-7, 3.38) starts for the Padres, and Brandon Pfaadt (5-1, 4.00 ERA) gets the nod for the D-Backs.
