San Diego State football has been gaining momentum in the recruiting game, and their 2026 class just got stronger with the addition of wide receiver Derek Stevenson—a player defined by versatility, determination, and a deep-rooted support system.

For Stevenson, committing to the Aztecs wasn’t just about football; it was about family, fit, and a future built on faith and discipline.

More Than Recruited—Needed

Stevenson’s decision to join San Diego State was largely influenced by the authentic connection he built with the coaching staff. While many programs showed interest, the Aztecs stood apart.

“The conversations with Coach Sampson really solidified my commitment,” Stevenson said. “We talked about how they were going to use me in the offense, and no other school really did that for me. Plus, I connected with Coach Lew and Coach Matty J instantly. Not only do I feel wanted—I feel needed.”

That feeling of belonging was reinforced the moment Stevenson arrived on campus for his official visit. “Walking into the OV (official visit), I really didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “But the coaches and players made me feel at home and showed me what being an Aztec is all about.”

Built for the Spotlight

For fans unfamiliar with Stevenson’s game, he offers a dynamic skill set that’s hard to miss.

“I’m what you want in a receiver—fast, physical, and with good hands,” he said. “I’m also great after the catch. Don’t get me wrong, I love burnin’ people deep, but there’s nothing like taking a slant or 5-yard out to the crib. So, I’d say I’m very versatile and can play inside and out.”

That versatility is matched by a tireless work ethic. Stevenson is known for posting about his training routines and offseason grind on social media—a transparent look into the drive behind his game.

“I have a goal to be a Hall of Famer in the NFL, and I’ll do whatever I can to reach that,” he said. “There’s always something I can do to improve, and I’m constantly working. Posting about it shows how focused I am on being great.”

Faith, Family, and Football

While many high school athletes talk about pressure and expectations, Stevenson approaches the game with clarity and humility, rooted in his family and faith.

“My parents have been my biggest influence. For as long as I can remember, they’ve poured into me,” Stevenson said. “I’m the youngest of four, and I can admit—I’m a little spoiled. My sister says I get away with everything,” he added with a laugh. “But seriously, I’m very grateful. My brothers, sister, and especially my parents push me to be better. They’ve made so many sacrifices for me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.”

On game days, Stevenson keeps his focus by leaning into spiritual preparation.

“I listen to music and I pray,” he said. “This past season, my dad and I started praying together before games. We take turns. I usually just ask God to keep me safe, let His will be done, and allow me to play to the best of my ability.”

That spiritual discipline carries over to how Stevenson balances his priorities off the field, too. “God keeps me grounded. I realize I’ve been blessed with a gift to play football at a high level. It’s my responsibility to grow and show that gift.”

Learning Through the Game

Stevenson’s favorite moment from his high school career is a testament to resilience. In a critical playoff game—a rematch against a team they had lost to earlier in the year—he faced a personal test.

“I dropped a wide-open post route. I mean, I was WIDE open. Had the DB beat by like eight yards,” Stevenson recalled. “But on the very next play, my coach called a 5-yard out. I broke like five tackles and took it to the crib. That’s my favorite play because I redeemed myself. After the game, my coach told me to play every play with that same determination. And that’s how I play now.”

Preparing for the Next Level

With graduation still ahead of him, Stevenson is already focused on leveling up for college ball. His main focus?

“Catching the ball through contact and tightening up my route running,” he said. “I work out with my brother and other D1 guys all the time, so I feel like by the time I get to campus in January, I’ll be ready to contribute.”

Though his accolades are already impressive, Stevenson isn’t content yet. “I don’t think I have that one big accomplishment yet,” he said. “Helping my school win its second state championship in four years would be pretty cool.”

Advice for the Next Wave

Stevenson knows the journey to college football isn’t easy, and he wants younger athletes to understand what it takes.

“Just keep working,” he said. “I know it’s easy to get a big head when you start to have success, but never get complacent. There’s always something you can get better at.”

He also knows challenges are inevitable, especially with the jump to college. But he isn’t fazed. “Life is full of challenges, so I know they’re coming. I just need to stay prepared.”

And prepared he is. Between his family foundation, unwavering faith, and relentless commitment to the grind, Derek Stevenson is ready to make an impact on the Mesa—and beyond.
