San Diego Wave: Morgan, Girma, Kornieck called up to USWNT April camp
This Tuesday, March 28, it was officially announced that several San Diego Wave players were called up to their respective national teams for friendly matches in April.
Alex Morgan, Naomi Girma, and Taylor Kornieck were all called up to the USWNT for a pair of friendlies against the Republic of Ireland on April 8 and April 11.
Morgan has done very well for the USWNT in 2023, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in four games played between the SheBelieves Cup and a friendly match against New Zealand.
The 33-year-old striker will certainly start one of the two games against the Republic of Ireland and is one of the key players to watch in those matchups. The San Dimas, Calif. native started off the 2023 NWSL season in amazing fashion scoring the game-winner for the wave in a 3-2 victory against the Chicago Red Stars.

Naomi Girma has also been a consistent starter for the USWNT as of late, starting in two games in the 2023 SheBelieves Cup and starting two friendly games against New Zealand. The young center-back played the 90 minutes for the Wave in its NWSL season-opener and will be looking for more minutes at the international level heading into the World Cup.
Taylor Kornieck is still fighting for more minutes with the USWNT as she did not start any games in the SheBelieves Cup, but she did start one of the New Zealand games. The 24-year-old midfielder played the entire second half in the Wave’s season-opener, as this is another golden opportunity to showcase her abilities at the international stage.
The callups were not limited to the USWNT for the San Diego Wave, as Sofia Jakobsson was called up to Sweden, and Emily van Egmond received the call for Australia. Sweden will play a pair of friendlies against Norway on April 7 and April 11, while Australia will play Scotland and England on those same dates. Both Jakobsson and van Egmond have received plenty of playing time with their respective national teams over the years and are basically locks for the World Cup.
The Canada women’s national team also put out its squad to face France on April 11 and SD Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan received a call-up.
The Wave clearly has plenty of representation on the international stage, and it will be interesting to see if any other players receive a callup as the season progresses.
