The San Diego Wave extended its winning streak to three games after defeating Bay FC 2-1 at Snapdragon Stadium this Sunday, May 4.
The previous two victories had come on the road against Racing Louisville and Chicago Stars.
The last result at home had been a defeat to Kansas City, as the Wave were able to ride the momentum of the road streak. Jonas Eidevall made one change to the lineup that was able to defeat Chicago 3-0 as Maria Sanchez replaced Melanie Barcenas.
This was a bit surprising, given Barcenas’ recent performances. Kimmi Ascanio also stayed in the lineup after scoring her first professional goal in Chicago.

Maria Sanchez made an immediate impact in the match as she assisted in the Wave’s first goal in the sixth minute. The Mexican international sent in a cross into the box off a corner kick that Kennedy Wesley headed into the back of the net.
In the 17th minute, Bay FC tied the game, taking advantage of a miscue by the Wave in midfield. Kenza Dali lost the ball after being surrounded by three players. The ball fell to Racheal Kundananji, who passed it to Karlie Lema on the edge of the box.
Lema made a run into the box and released a cross-body shot that was able to get past Kailen Sheridan.
Sanchez had an opportunity to regain San Diego’s lead in the 26th minute with a penalty, but Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz denied her.
San Diego was completely dominating possession at the half and was the better team on the pitch. However, the home team was not able to fully take advantage of this.
The Wave were even more dominant in the second half, but the elusive winning goal was nowhere to be seen. Some inconsistent finishing and some stops by Jordan Silkowitz contributed to the 1-1 scoreline.
San Diego stayed persistent and scored a very unexpected game-winner in the dying moments of the match. The goal again came via a corner kick, this time executed by Kenza Dali.

This time, Trinity Armstrong was at the end of it to score her first professional goal and get the three points for the Wave. San Diego was clearly the better team in this match, with 64 percent possession and 17 shots to Bay FC’s six.
The Wave are now on a three-game winning streak and are third in the NWSL with 13 points from seven games played. San Diego will host the Portland Thorns on May 10 and face Gotham away from home on May 16.
