Padres Down on the Farm: May 29 (TinCaps make seven-run comeback)

Padres affiliates went 2-3 on Friday.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 13-8 vs Albuquerque) (24-31 on the season)
Nick Schnell – 3-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Pablo Reyes – 2-for-4, Two Doubles, Three RBI

Marco Gonzales – 3.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 5 K (74 pitches – 54 strikes)
Marco Gonzales allowed six runs on ten hits to the Isotopes on Friday. The left-hander pitched into the fourth inning, throwing 54 of 74 pitches for strikes, but allowed 10 hard-hit balls in 16 batted ball events. Albuquerque averaged a 97 mph exit velocity against Gonzales. Even so, Gonzalez struck out five batters. Logan Gillaspie took the loss, as he allowed seven runs on eight hits in 1.1 innings. Gillaspie was charged with three home runs, as batters teed off on his four-seam and curveball. Michael Flynn threw two scoreless innings, striking out one batter. Ethan Routzahn threw a scoreless ninth inning, picking up a double play.
Nick Schnell’s recent tear continued, as the Chihuahuas outfielder finished with three hits. Schnell demolished a two-run home run in the game, a 443-foot shot that came off the bat at 107.2 mph. Pablo Reyes hit two doubles as the leadoff, driving in three runs in the process. Mason McCoy and Will Wagner each had multi-hit games, with Wagner hitting a double and scoring a run. Anthony Vilar reached base twice, scoring two runs.
San Antonio Missions (Won 8-1 vs Corpus Christi) (19-30 on the season)
Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-2, Single, RBI, Three Walks
Albert Fabian – 1-for-3, RBI Single, Two Walks
Jhony Brito – 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (52 pitches – 37 strikes)
Jhony Brito made minced meat of the Hooks’ lineup, as he held them to one hit in six scoreless innings. Brito rode his sinker to success, as he generated 10 outs via the groundball. Brito’s rehab assignment continues to go well, as the right-hander has a 3.72 ERA in five games, including a 2.03 mark in Double-A. Sadrac Franco fired two innings of one-hit, one-run baseball. The right-hander has struck out 13 in 10.2 innings in May, albeit with nine walks and four hit batters. Harry Gustin battled through command inconsistency in the ninth inning, walking three but also striking out two in a scoreless frame.
The Missions used plate discipline to lead the way, as they drew 12 walks en route to victory. Braedon Karpathios drew three walks, and his second-inning walk came with the bases loaded to put the Missions ahead. San Antonio tacked on with an RBI single from Albert Fabian, who drew two walks later in the game. Francisco Acuna and Luis Verdugo drew bases-loaded walks as well. Ethan Salas went 1-for-4 with a single and a walk, scoring a run. Salas and Carson Tucker had the team’s two sacrifice flies in the game. Only one of the eight runs scored came in via a base hit, but the team’s plate patience paid off.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 9-8 vs South Bend) (23-26 on the season)
Kasen Wells – 4-for-5, Go-Ahead RBI Single
Alex McCoy – 2-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI
Kash Mayfield – 0.1 IP, 3 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 0 K (32 pitches – 17 strikes)
Kash Mayfield endured his toughest start as a professional, as the left-hander was chased after just one out. However, his team rallied back to pick up the left-hander, snatching away a 9-8 win in South Bend. Mayfield allowed a two-run home run to Josiah Hartshorn, who has done nothing but crush the TinCaps this series. Mayfield allowed an RBI single to Jose Escobar before plunking Justin Stransky to load the bases. With his pitch count at 32, Mayfield was pulled from the game, and Isaiah Lowe came on in relief. The move to Lowe did not produce the intended result in the first, as on a 1-2, the once-hard-throwing right-hander fired a 91-mph fastball middle-middle, and Drew Bowser crushed it for a grand slam. Lowe was able to find his composure from there, as he pitched 3.2 innings and allowed just one run outside of the home run. Luis German did an excellent job holding the deficit, pitching two scoreless innings of all-business baseball. Braian Salazar threw a scoreless seventh, and with the TinCaps down three in the eighth, Clay Edmondson came on. The sidewinding right-hander threw a scoreless eighth inning and ultimately picked up the win. Edmondson also threw a scoreless ninth with the lead intact, stranding the tying run on base.
These guys are ROLLING.

Jonathan Vastine continues to make an impact with his power. While not as publicized as some of his teammates, Vastine has found a knack for extra-base hits; his second-inning home run put the TinCaps on the board. Rosman Verdugo scored Zach Evans and Kasen Wells with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Evans and Wells again kick-started a rally in the sixth, as both reached base to open the inning. Verdugo moved the runners over on a groundout, and Carlos Rodriguez’s groundout scored Evans. Alex McCoy’s two-out RBI single scored Wells, cutting the deficit to three. Jack Costello hit a double in the seventh inning, but was left on base. Costello has drawn six walks this series. Alex McCoy launched his tenth home run of the season, tying him with Jake Cunningham for second in the Midwest League. Costello got the TinCaps within one run with an RBI double, and Jonathan Vastine’s double to the right-center gap tied the game at eight. Having picked up three hits already, Kasen Wells’ opposite-field single through the 5.5 hole scored Vastine to give the Comeback ‘Caps a 9-8 lead. For the TinCaps, it was their biggest comeback in just over 13 months, matching a seven-run comeback against Lansing on April 22, 2025 (yes, the Leo De Vries cycle game, you can read that day’s report here).

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 3-1 vs Inland Empire) (28-21 on the season)
Ryan Wideman – 1-for-4, RBI Single
Qrey Lott – 1-for-3, Double, Run Scored
Kruz Schoolcraft – 3.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 9 K (76 pitches – 48 strikes)
Left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft pitched into the fourth inning for the fourth time in five May starts, and in the process, set a career-high in strikeouts. The Padres’ No. 2 prospect struck out a career-high nine, picking up 16 whiffs. Schoolcraft has shown major strides since his season debut and has held batters to a .225 batting average in May. Schoolcraft has 25 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. Vicarte Domingo threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, benefitting from a caught stealing by Truitt Madonna. Rordy Mejia threw two scoreless innings as well, striking out three batters. Daichi Moriki threw a scoreless ninth inning, facing the minimum.

The Storm’s lineup was held scoreless by 66ers starter Mason Peters, who struck out six in 3.2 innings. Yoiber Ocopio and Qrey Lott hit doubles against Peters, but neither was able to score. Kerrington Cross clobbered a 108 mph double to left field in the fifth inning, but with two outs, was left on base. Ryan Wideman drove in the team’s only run of the game on an RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring Qrey Lott. Conner Westenburg reached base on a hit-by-pitch and stole his 17th base of the season. Westenburg also picked up an outfield assist in the loss.
ACL Padres (Lost 6-5 vs ACL Rangers) (10-10 on the season)
Blake Hunt – 1-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Moises Valdez – 2-for-4, Double, Two Runs Scored
Lan-Hong Su – 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Lan-Hong Su made his third career start, pitching three innings of one-run baseball. While the right-hander did not pick up a strikeout, Su was able to keep the Rangers guessing, with an even 4-to-4 groundout to flyout ratio. Adler Cecil came on and threw three innings of scoreless relief. Cecil walked three but struck out a season-high six batters in his outing. The former Temecula Valley left-hander is working back from a missed 2025 season and has exhibited steadier command in his return. Landry Jurecka took the loss, as he allowed two runs while recording just two outs, departing with the bases loaded. That run total went up to five, as Jack Wheeler hit a bases-clearing double off Dariel Polanco.
Blake Hunt continues to hit well on rehab assignment, as he hit his second home run in as many games. Hunt is now hitting .316 with a 1.132 OPS in seven rehab games. Brendan Durfee hit an RBI single, catching all nine innings. Fabian Alcantara hit an RBI single, while Moises Valdez doubled and scored two runs. Luis De Leon tripled and scored two runs. Santiago Vargas drove in a run on an RBI groundout, but the team was unable to put the tying run on base.
