Padres minor league affiliates went 3-1 on Saturday night.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 13-7 vs Albuquerque) (25-31 on the season)
Carlos E. Rodriguez – 1-for-4, Three-Run Home Run
Marcos Castanon – 2-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI

JP Sears – 5 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 7 K (87 pitches – 54 strikes)
El Paso’s high-powered offense roared to life on Saturday, clearing the fence three times en route to a win. Carlos E. Rodriguez, not known for his power, launched his first home run of the season. Rodriguez’s three-run home run capped off a six-run third. Pablo Reyes had three hits, including a two-run double, and Jase Bowen drew two walks. Bowen scored two runs, as did Mason McCoy. Nick Schnell hit his 10th home run of the season in the fifth, his third home run of the series. Marcos Castanon drove in two runs and hit back-to-back home runs with Schnell in the fifth. Castanon has posted a .901 OPS in May, with two home runs and 13 RBI.
JP Sears pitched five innings of five-run baseball, striking out seven. Sears has the team length, helping rest a somewhat taxed bullpen. The left-hander upped the use of his slider, but the results were not what he or the team expected. Sears allowed four barrels, all coming on the slider. Both Albuquerque homers against him also came on mislocated sliders. Sean Boyle threw three innings in relief, allowing two runs. Boyle also allowed plenty of hard contact (67% hard-hit rate against his sinker), but kept the ball on the ground to mitigate the damage. David Morgan threw a scoreless ninth inning, throwing five of six pitches for strikes in a tidy frame.
San Antonio Missions (Won 1-0 vs Corpus Christi) (20-30 on the season)
Chris Sargent – 1-for-3, Run-Scoring RBI Single
Ryan Jackson – 1-for-3, Single
Miguel Mendez – 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (61 pitches – 39 strikes)
Miguel Mendez continues to build back to a full workload, crossing the 60-pitch mark for the first time since coming off the injured list. Mendez and four other pitchers combined for a shutout of the visiting Corpus Christi Hooks. The Padres’ No. 4 prospect fired three scoreless innings, picking up four strikeouts in the process. Mendez showed his high-octane velocity, touching 100 mph on the fastball. Mendez got 10 whiffs in the outing, and if he can limit the walks as he did today, the ceiling for the right-hander remains in the rotation. Josh Mallitz struck out one in two scoreless innings, earning the victory; it was Mallitz’s first win at the Double-A level. Eric Yost came off the injured list and pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two. Yost will likely return to the rotation in the next series, either behind or opening for Jhony Brito. Andrew Moore struck out four in 1.2 innings, and Clark Candiotti used his fastball-splitter combo to pick up two strikeouts and his first career save. At the dish, the Missions did not have much going, as they mustered five singles all game. One such single produced the only run of the game. Kai Roberts led off the fifth with a walk, and a sacrifice bunt by Francisco Acuna moved him to second base. Chris Sargent, starting behind the plate, singled to left-center field. Roberts moved up to third, but the throw in from center fielder Lucas Spence went beyond the third baseman. With the error, Roberts moved up 90 feet and scored. Ethan Salas went hitless in the game, while Tirso Ornelas went 1-for-3 with a single and a stolen base.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 7-0 vs South Bend) (23-27 on the season)
Jack Costello – 1-for-4, Double
Jake Cunningham – 1-for-3, Single, Walk
Abraham Parra – 5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R (4 ER), 3 BB, 7 K (92 pitches – 55 strikes)
Abraham Parra had the kind of start that saw growth despite the final line. The right-hander struck out seven in 5.1 innings, pitching into the sixth inning for the first time all season. The right-hander’s seven punchouts matched a season-high, as did his three walks issued. Parra was able to stop innings from snowballing early on, as after a run-scoring hit, Parra would promptly lock in and retire the side. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) through five innings, but returned to the mound for the sixth, showing some fatigue. Parra issued two leadoff walks, but struck out Miguel Useche for out number one. Having hit the 90-pitch mark, Parra was relieved by Igor Gil. Gil’s outing saw him retire the first man he faced, but a walk on a 3-2 pitch loaded the bases for Drew Bowser. Gil threw a 1-0 breaking ball high in the strike zone, and Bowser crushed it for a grand slam. The TinCaps now trailed 7-0, and Gil’s day ended one out later. Ty Adcock threw a scoreless seventh inning, and Will Varmette pitched a scoreless eighth inning. For Varmette, his scoreless inning today marked his seventh scoreless appearance in nine outings in May. Despite drawing six walks, the TinCaps struggled to do much of anything at the plate. Jack Costello had the team’s only extra-base hit with a double in the fourth inning. Jake Cunningham hit a single and drew a walk, becoming one of just two TinCaps to reach third base all game. Lamar King Jr drew one of six walks, stealing his 10th base of the season in the loss.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 2-0 vs Inland Empire) (29-21 on the season)
Jose Verdugo – 1-for-3, Triple, RBI
Alcides Hernandez – 1-for-3, Double, Run Scored
Tyler Schmitt – 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K (95 pitches – 54 strikes)
Tyler Schmitt, have yourself a night! The Storm’s starting pitcher fired six shutout innings, setting a career-best mark in strikeouts. Schmitt struck out nine batters in six innings, allowing just four hits. The right-hander got 21 swings and misses, a season-high and the second-best mark in all of Single-A baseball. Schmitt wraps up his first month in the rotation with a 2.33 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 27 innings. Nick Falter struck out three in two scoreless innings, and has now fanned 22 in 20.1 innings of relief this month. Falter has been a key cog in the Storm bullpen this season, so don’t be surprised if he makes the leap to High-A in the second half. Will Koger picked up his fifth save of the season after a scoreless ninth inning. The Storm’s lineup did not have an offensive eruption as they have been known to do, but it did not matter. Jose Verdugo opened the scoring with an RBI triple in the first inning, scoring Kerrington Cross from first base. Verdugo had a sneakily good month of May, slashing .273/346/.437 with two home runs, 11 RBI, and seven stolen bases. Kerrington Cross hit two singles and scored a run, while Ryan Wideman went 1-for-4 with a double. Alcides Hernandez hit his first career Single-A knock with an eighth-inning double, coming in to score on an Inland Empire error. Lake Elsinore is now 6-5 against the 66ers this season.
