Brian Dutcher has done it again!

The San Diego State Aztecs landed former Rice guard Nick Anderson in the transfer portal one day after his visit.

“The 6-foot-3 guard had a spectacular season for the Owls, averaging 15.5PPG, 4.3RPG, 1.2APG, and 1.2SPG this season.” He averaged 19.8 points in 12 games at Prairie View in 2024-25 before transferring to Rice. Anderson also spent two seasons at the University of St. Thomas (Division III) before moving up to DI.

This is a perfect fit for the Aztecs.

This team needs someone who can hit the three-ball at a consistent rate, and Anderson loves to attempt the shot from beyond the arc. Aztec Analytics helps break down his three-point numbers compared to last year’s Aztecs squad.

According to his former player profile, his favorite NBA player is Stephen Curry … go figure.

Anderson was all over the court for the Owls last season. As seen by his numbers, he excels offensively and contributes on the boards. The guard averaged north of one steal per game as well, so he shows up on the defensive end, which is very important when playing for the Aztecs.

Anderson was second on the team in scoring behind Trae Broadnax’s 15.6 per game. They essentially went hand in hand together on the court. Rice did not have a good offense at all, but those two led the way all year for them. Anderson led the team in field goal percentage (43.8%), three-pointers (84), and three-point field goal percentage (40.0%).

Anderson scored a season high of 29 points in the loss against Tulane. He reached 20+ points seven times while also having a few duds in December. Against No. 20 Tennessee, Anderson dropped 19 points and added three steals in the loss. Despite the blowout loss, Anderson showed up against one of the better teams in the country. This will be necessary for the Aztecs in November of this year when they are back in the Players Era Festival, taking on the best of the best.

Anderson is joining Jeremiah “Bear” Cherry as the only two commits for the Aztecs so far. A few more names are expected to land on The Mesa at some point in the coming days and weeks.

The backcourt looks very healthy for the Aztecs for this upcoming season. Not to mention, incoming freshman Zach White is joining the team very soon. With Latrell Davis and Anderson in the lineup, the Aztecs have two legit scoring threats as they shift to the Pac-12.

Elzie Harrington has yet to make a decision on his future, while BJ Davis committed to Creighton on Tuesday to play in the Big East, where he will likely finish his collegiate career. Taj DeGourville added his name to the portal this past weekend. Dutcher hopes to keep Tae Simmons as well, as the sophomore could emerge as a star for the Aztecs.

The offseason is still young, but a potential lineup of Harrington, Latrell Davis, Anderson, Simmons, and Cherry looks very enticing.
