Jack Devine Interview: The 2027 dual-threat QB commits to SDSU
SDSU Athletics

An interview with 2027 dual-threat quarterback Jack Devine, who commits to the San Diego State football program from Texas.
Nothing is a guarantee in the modern era of collegiate athletics.
With NIL deals and the transfer portal prevalent in collegiate sports, players change uniforms and allegiances constantly.
The San Diego State football program is no different, as the team consistently loses and adds players to its roster. With a constant adjustment of players, schools are committing earlier to young talent. If you can bring in a player early in their career, the hope is that they will stay loyal to the program.
This week, SDSU got a huge commitment from a dual-threat quarterback out of the state of Texas.

Jack Devine threw for 3,492 yards in his junior season at Regents High School. In that span, he tossed 55 touchdowns and a remarkably low three interceptions. The right-handed thrower also ran for 725 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He was first team All-District and second team All-State (Texas) in 2025.
At 6-foot-3 and 205 lbs., the young QB has excellent size and a knack for running the ball effectively. Putting up these numbers as a junior is impressive. San Diego State can only imagine what damage he will do in the fall as he plays his senior season.
Devine had at least 10 other offers from D1 schools. San Diego State was able to secure the commitment, but there is a long road until the 2028 Aztecs season.
Behind center, he shows excellent touch with a great ability to gun the ball downfield. He is elusive out of the pocket and is willing to run. As a runner, Devine shows great instincts and an ability to make defenders miss. He will provide this aspect at the next level regardless of the quality of the defense. There is a high ceiling with Jack Devine.
Here are some highlights of Devine’s junior season.
In talking to Jack Devine, he was thoughtful and respectful. You get a sense that he is wise beyond his years.
San Diego State is hopeful that the young QB will remain committed to the team. At this point, Devine is prepared to come to San Diego when his high school years are done. His parents met in San Diego, and the city holds a special place in the hearts of the Devine family. Carrie and Joe Devine told their son about the city and the campus. Jack Devine is all in for his California adventure.
Jack’s father, Joe, went to Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania and played basketball and Rugby. The apple does not fall too far from the tree. Athleticism is in Jack Devine’s blood.
Here is a brief look at the young quarterback who may be a focal point of the San Diego State offense one day.
Jack Devine was candid and upfront. He made himself available at the drop of a hat. That speaks volumes to his character.
He will succeed in the game he loves.

Describe your first experience in the game. When did you first play football?
“I first started to play tackle football when I was in second grade, where I played linebacker and fullback and loved every minute of it. I loved hitting people and being a competitor.”
At what point did you start playing quarterback?
“I started to play quarterback in 6th grade, but wasn’t fully just a quarterback until the 7th grade.”
What about being a quarterback do you enjoy most? Do you enjoy leading others?
“I love getting the ball every play and getting to control a game. Also, the fact that you affect everyone on the team, and they rely on you. You have the ability to lead men into games, which is the most rewarding part.”
Are there any players in the pros you looked up to or modeled your game after?
“I looked up to Russel Wilson growing up, and now I like to model my game after Drake Maye.”
How do you like being referred to as a dual-threat quarterback? What does it mean to you?
“I loved being referred to as a dual threat. Dual threat to me doesn’t have to mean that you have designed run plays, even though I do love those. But it means that when you have to, you can make some guys miss and run to get first downs.”
When did SDSU first show up in your mind? Which coaches came or called?
“Coach Lewis was the first coach from SDSU that I came in contact with, and shortly after, I started to get to know Coach Johnson a lot as well.”
What about SDSU can help you achieve your next goals? How did the school win you over? Did you visit the campus and city? What were your thoughts?
“Both Coach Lewis and Coach Johnson have built an incredible offense at SDSU. They also have consistently put out great quarterbacks. I know they can make me one too, and that was a big factor in my commitment. I have been to the city and love it. Never been on campus, but my parents met in San Diego, and they have been on campus, and I trust their word. When I was in the city, it was beautiful and a perfect place to play football!”
Where does your motivation come in the game? Parents? Coaches? Internal?
“I am definitely internally motivated. My parents and coaches help guide me, but I am never forced to do anything by anyone else but myself.”
How can you improve? What are you working on the most right now?
“I can improve by getting faster, stronger, and making some small tweaks in my mechanics.”
How do you anticipate your senior year will be in HS? What goals do you have?
“We are playing for a state championship every year, so that’s my goal, and my personal goal is to be the most dominant player in Texas by being able to distribute the ball all over the field by taking what the defense gives me.”
How excited are you to get to San Diego and start your college career?
“I’m pumped and looking forward to getting to SDSU as soon as possible!”
