The season sweep of the Seattle Mariners was on the line entering tonight’s primetime matchup on Sunday Night Baseball.
The San Diego Padres, who secured the 2026 Vedder Cup with a 2-0 win on Friday, took care of business tonight, beating the Mariners 8-3 thanks to huge contributions from Lucas Giolito, Gavin Sheets, and Ty France.
Tonight’s game featured two important season debuts for each club. Giolito was signed and called up to bolster San Diego’s rotation while Colt Emerson made his much-anticipated MLB debut for the Seattle Mariners.
Giolito made four minor league starts before making tonight’s start in front of a national audience. With tonight’s start, it marked the sixth different team in his career while starting his tenth major league season. He outdueled George Kirby and earned his first win of the 2026 campaign.
The Padres quickly jumped ahead in the first inning against Kirby. Following groundouts from Fernando Tatis Jr. and Miguel Andujar, Sheets demolished a 106.8 mph home run into the right field seats off a first-pitch elevated fastball.

Xander Bogaerts walked to lead off the fifth inning as a result of an incorrect challenge by Mariners catcher Mitch Garver. He followed by swiping second and third base across the next two plate appearances. He subsequently stole second and third base before France lined an RBI single into right field that gave the Padres a 2-0 lead.

San Diego would tack on more runs in the sixth inning. Miguel Andujar smoked a one-out double into right-center field before Gavin Sheets would strike again. He took Kirby deep for the second time in the game, sending an almost identical home run back to right field. Both homers registered 106.8 mph off the bat. Sheets’ first inning homer sailed 400 feet, with his second blast sailing 404 feet.

The fun didn’t stop as Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill hit back-to-back doubles, increasing San Diego’s lead to 5-0. This would end Kirby’s night, tossing 5.2 innings while giving up six earned runs — the most runs he’d given up in a 2026 start thus far.

The offense continued to pile it on in the sixth inning when France lined another single to center field off Cooper Criswel,l driving in two more runs, putting the Padres up 7-0. This five-run sixth inning marked the first time since June 8, 2024, that the Padres logged four extra-base hits in one inning.
After being super efficient through the first five innings, only allowing a single to Luke Raley, things started to unravel quickly in the bottom of the sixth, where he walked the first three batters that would load the bases — ending Giolito’s season debut and putting his line in jeopardy.
This is where things got dicey. Yuki Matsui followed in relief. While he didn’t allow a hit, he did allow three of Giolito’s baserunners to score before escaping the inning — it could’ve gotten a lot worse.
While Giolito pitched into the sixth inning, he didn’t log an out. His night ended with a final line of 5.0 innings to go along with three earned runs, walks, and strikeouts. Overall, a solid performance from Giolito before his command got away from him in the sixth inning.
Sheets came through once again in the seventh inning, where he doubled, driving in Tatis Jr. from third base, extending the Padres’ lead to 8-3.
Both Sheets and France had huge offensive performances, combining to drive in seven of the eight San Diego runs while totaling six hits. Both reached base in all of their plate appearances.
Overall, the Padres played a clean game for the most part, besides Andujar’s fielding error in the eighth. They had 10 hits, including six for extra bases, leading to eight runs. Giolito looked good in his season debut, while the bullpen held things down. Although Matsui allowed three inherited runners to score, between him and Bradgley, Rodriguez, they didn’t allow a hit or earned run. The Padres’ pitching staff as a whole was excellent limitin the Mariners to just one hit.
The Padres will be heading back to San Diego as they will begin a nine-game home-stand starting tomorrow against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’ll be an exciting series with both the Padres and Dodgers coming off respective sweeps of the Mariners and Angels.
