Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Sunday to end the week.
Here is our daily report of the day’s events.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 12-7 vs Salt Lake) (21-24 on the season)
Jase Bowen – 2-for-4, Double, Two Walks, Four RBI
Marcos Castanon – 2-for-5, Home Run, Three RBI

Marco Gonzales – 3.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K (61 pitches – 41 strikes)
The Chihuahuas’ offense racked up a dozen runs in the launching pad of Salt Lake City, slugging their way to a win in the series finale. Jase Bowen was responsible for one-third of the team’s runs, as he drove in four runs from the clean-up spot in the lineup. Bowen’s fourth-inning single scored two runs, giving the team a 2-1 lead at the time. The Chihuahuas’ right fielder made a spectacular catch in the fourth inning, and later gave the team the lead back with a two-run double in the seventh. Marcos Castanon cut into the team’s deficit with a sixth-inning home run, his fifth of the season. Castanon took a Sam Aldigheri fastball the opposite way, cutting the home team’s lead to 6-5. El Paso added on in the eighth, as Jose Miranda and Carlos D. Rodriguez hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Victor Duarte, up from Single-A as catching reinforcement, hit his first home run with the Chihuahuas to extend the lead. It was Duarte’s first career Triple-A home run.
Wow!
In his second game at Triple-A, Victor Duarte launched his first home run at the level against former big leaguer Kaleb Ort.

Marco Gonzales had his longest start since coming off the injured list, pitching 3.1 innings. The crafty left-hander allowed just two runs, striking out two batters. He worked around constant base traffic, allowing six hits, but picked up six of 10 outs on ground balls. Misael Tamarez struggled at the altitude of Salt Lake City, pitching 1.1 innings of four-run ball. Tamarez allowed a go-ahead sacrifice fly but departed with the bases loaded. All three bequeathed runners scored against Logan Gillaspie, who allowed a walk and a single before recording the final out of the inning. Sean Boyle pitched a scoreless sixth inning, earning the win. Ethan Routzahn wound up pitching three innings on 40 pitches, picking up his first career nine-out save.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 6-3 vs Wichita) (14-25 on the season)
Ethan Salas – 2-for-5, Two Singles, Two Runs Scored, Stolen Base
Kai Roberts – 2-for-3, Double, Single, RBI
Jhony Brito – 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 1 K (53 pitches – 29 strikes)
Jhony Brito made his first rehab appearance with the Missions and third rehab outing overall, pitching four innings in the Missions’ loss to Wichita. Brito allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two walks, with both runs coming in the fourth inning. The right-hander threw 29 of 53 pitches for strikes, sitting comfortably at 94-95 miles per hour on the fastball and showing a four-pitch mix highlighted by his signature changeup. Michael Flynn pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in relief of Brito, and has now struck out 10 batters in his last 6.1 innings. Flynn has yet to allow a run this month. Andrew Thurman allowed two runs in 1.2 innings, including a game-tying home run to Garrett Spain and a go-ahead double to Andrew Cossetti. Wichita got two more against Andrew Moore in the ninth, as a double steal led to a rare throwing error by Ethan Salas, allowing both runners to score.
Cossetti comes through again ?

The Missions’ lineup was led by its top half. Ethan Salas finished with two base hits, stealing his ninth base of the season as well. Salas also scored two of the team’s three runs. The Missions catcher reached base in four of six games this series, despite only finishing 4-for-21 against Wichita (.190). Kai Roberts broke through with two hits, his first multi-hit game in just over a week (5/9 vs Midland). Roberts doubled and later drove in Salas on an RBI single in the fifth inning. The former 7th-rounder has hit a respectable .269 in May, albeit with a .645 OPS. Romeo Sanabria drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, and Braedon Karpathios scored a run on a wild pitch from Wichita starter Eli Jones. Luis Verdugo and Kai Murphy each hit singles from the bottom of the lineup, though the Missions stranded nine baserunners in the loss.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 11-8 vs Cedar Rapids) (19-20 on the season)
Justin DeCriscio – 3-for-6, Three-Run Home Run
Jack Costello – 2-for-5, RBI Double
Jamie Hitt – 5 IP, 7 H, 7 R (6 ER), 2 BB, 5 K (90 pitches – 60 strikes)
The TinCaps lineup came to life with a vigor reminiscent of their best baseball this season, gutting out an 11-8 win over the Kernels. Kavares Tears opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Justin DeCriscio. DeCriscio had quite the impact on the game, as his second-inning home run gave the TinCaps a 5-2 lead. The former NC State shortstop has seen time all over the diamond at High-A in his first week in the Midwest, but has stepped up wherever he has been asked to play. Zach Evans tied the game at seven with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly, and Jonathan Vastine gave the TinCaps an 8-7 lead with an RBI single. Jack Costello’s RBI double in the seventh added on a run, and Oswaldo Linares hit a seeing-eye single to center field to score two more in the eighth. Rosman Verdugo stole two bases in the game, and Kasen Wells walked three times, scoring two runs.

Jamie Hitt had his gutsiest outing of the season, as the left-hander battled through five innings. Hitt allowed two home runs with runners on throughout his start, but was able to limit any damage when the Kernels had major RBI chances. Hitt was able to strike out five batters across his five innings of work, and for all the troubles, he earned his first career win. CJ Widger threw a scoreless sixth inning, and fellow left-hander Igor Gil threw a scoreless seventh. Gil returned for the eighth but walked the bases loaded with no outs. Manager Jonathan Matthews called on closer Clay Edmondson to attempt a six-out save. Edmondson struck out the first batter he saw before allowing a run-scoring groundout; he would end the inning with no further damage. The right-hander returned for the ninth inning, and despite one hit allowed, struck out Eduardo Tait to seal the win and his Midwest League-leading eighth save.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 16-7 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (23-16 on the season)
Ryan Wideman – 3-for-3, Triple, Double, Stolen Base
Truitt Madonna – 2-for-3, Triple, Double, Two RBI
Carlos Medina – 0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 0 K (34 pitches – 19 strikes)
Sean Barnett – 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (30 pitches – 18 strikes)
The Storm’s pitching staff had a day to forget and move on from, as the visiting Quakes scored 17 in a Storm loss. Starter Carlos Medina failed to escape the first inning, throwing 34 pitches and allowing five earned runs. Rordy Mejia allowed two runs in two innings, striking out two batters in a shorter relief outing. Daichi Moriki’s command was not as sharp as his previous outing, as he walked three and was charged with three earned runs in 0.2 innings. Both Brandon Langley and Cal Riehl allowed three runs, with Langley doing so in 1.1 innings and Riehl in one. The only two pitchers for Lake Elsinore to not to allow runs were converted outfielder Sean Barnett and position player Kerrington Cross. Barnett’s outing was notable, as he struck out two and threw 60% of his offerings for strikes. For Barnett, it was the longest scoreless outing of his career at 2.1 innings, and he has now pitched two straight scoreless appearances.
Ryan Wideman moved back to the leadoff spot and went back to doing Ryan Wideman things. In honor of the NBA playoffs happening, Wideman finished with a triple and a double as part of a three-hit game. Wideman also stole his minor league-leading 29th stolen base. Most notably, he now has more stolen bases than strikeouts this season. Truitt Madonna also hit a triple and double, driving in two runs. The double was Madonna’s team-leading 12th of the season. Bradley Frye hit a sacrifice fly to score Wideman, and Jorge Quintana scored Madonna on a run-scoring groundout. Yoiber Ocopio hit his first home run of the season in the ninth inning, a two-run blast. Kerrington Cross drove in the team’s final run on a double, technically recording the Storm’s first hit by a pitcher this season.
