SDSU hoops is back home after a tough loss at Utah State for a chance to sweep the Wyoming Cowboys on the season

San Diego State’s final season in the Mountain West Conference is going exactly how it should be. Five teams are capable of making a run to the regular-season title with roughly 8-10 games remaining in the season. San Diego State has nine MWC games remaining with a favorable path ahead.

The Aztecs will host Nevada, Grand Canyon, and Utah State in February. The toughest game remaining will be at The Pit against New Mexico. Everyone knows how hard that game will be. Even the game at Boise State will be difficult to open in March. If SDSU can take care of business at home, then they will have a very good chance of securing the regular-season title and top seed in the conference tournament.

Utah State, New Mexico, and San Diego State are all 9-2 in conference play. Nevada is 8-3 while GCU is 7-3. Nobody outside of these five squads will win the regular-season title; however, UNLV and Boise State have good enough rosters to make a run in the conference tournament. UNLV and Boise State will likely finish as the 6-7 seeds, setting up a potential battle with the 2-3 seeds on Day 2 (Thursday).

San Diego State has a great opportunity to stay atop the conference standings on Tuesday night when it hosts Wyoming. The Aggies and Lobos meet on Wednesday, which would then see only two teams lead the conference if SDSU beats the Pokes.

Wyoming is 13-9 on the season but only 4-7 in conference play. They are coming off an impressive win at home against Colorado State, which is their second win in three games. The Pokes did lose by 32 points to Utah State in between those wins.

“They are coming off a really good win in the border war against Colorado State, so they are feeling good about themselves,” Brian Dutcher said Monday. “You watch the tape of the first game we had against them, and they had some open shots that did not go in. If we run into a night like Colorado State did, where they make 12 threes, it will be a challenge. We have to make sure we do a good job of protecting the paint, yet also getting out and contesting all their three-point shots.”

Last Time They Met

Three weeks ago, the Aztecs traveled to Wyoming and battled with the Cowboys. The game was close early on, but the Aztecs would run away with it toward the end of the first half to eventually win by 17. Laramie is not an easy place to play, but the Aztecs took care of business and won a crucial game on the road.

SDSU shot 50% from the field and held the Pokes to 31%. Wyoming made only 17 field goals all game, and 10 of them were from beyond the arc. Look for the Cowboys to try to stay in the game on Tuesday night with the long ball.

Reese Dixon-Waters finished with a team-high 13 points on 5-9 shooting. Miles Byrd ended with 12 while Tae Simmons came off the bench and scored 10 points on 4-6 shooting.

Nasir Meyer scored 13 for the Cowboys, and Gavin Gores finished with 12. Leland Walker, the team’s leading scorer this season, had only 10 points in the loss, shooting 2-7. Walker and Khaden Bennett combined for 12 assists.

Where is Wyoming now?

Wyoming is 11-3 on the season at home and still hosts both Utah State (this Saturday) and Nevada (March 3) before the end of the season. Those will be important games to monitor as potential upsets to benefit the Aztecs down the stretch.

On the other hand, the Cowboys are 1-6 on the road with the only win coming at Air Force. Outside of a close loss to Texas Tech, Wyoming has lost a majority of its road games by blowouts.

Walker is averaging 15.3 points per game on the season. He scored only 10 in the win over CSU but scored 24 in the massive loss to the Aggies. Against Boise State on January 20th, Walker scored 30 points for the first time this season. He reached 28 on two occasions. There is no doubt that the senior can score, but will SDSU’s aggressive defense be too much for him again, especially on the road?

Meyer is not far behind at 13.2 per game. He adds 5.1 rebounds and shoots 49.5% from the field. He is an elite freshman for Los Angeles who is going to be a problem in college basketball in the future. Meyer scored only five points against the Rams, so the win that they had last time out was not on the backs of their two stars. Meyer can certainly score the rock as a freshman. He has three 25+ point games with a season high of 27 against Nevada.

Bennett was the star for the Pokes against the Rams. He had a monster game, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds. He drained 6 of 8 three-pointers and added two assists and three steals. His point total on the season is nearing double digits at 9.7. Stopping the trio of Walker, Meyer, and Bennett will be a big priority for the SDSU defense on Tuesday night.

Key To Victory

A simple key to victory for the Aztecs against this gritty Wyoming squad is to dominate the glass. Wyoming is a better rebounding team than SDSU, but if Brian Dutcher’s squad can control the boards, they will dominate this game. Wyoming averages 37.2 rebounds to SDSU’s 36.2. It is really the only statistic that is better than San Diego State’s, so they won’t be much of a threat elsewhere, outside of maybe three-point shooting.

Every team tries to attack SDSU the same way by driving and kicking out to an open player for a deep ball. Even if the shooter is covered well with a hand in their face, they still attempt the shot more often than not. SDSU will do a great job of making them miss a ton of three-pointers; however, grabbing the rebound and limiting offensive boards will lead the Aztecs to a big win against the Cowboys.
