SDSU goes for the season sweep over Nevada as they meet for the final time in the Mountain West Conference
The gauntlet starts now.
Seven games remain, and six of them are against the Top 7 teams in the conference. San Diego State is 17-6 overall and 11-2 in the MWC, 0.5 games back of the Utah State Aggies for the top seed. With Utah State playing a non-conference game against Memphis on Saturday night, the Aztecs will have an opportunity to move back into a tie with the Aggies at 12-2. New Mexico has a bye this weekend and won’t play again until Tuesday night against Air Force, so SDSU will also have a chance to increase its lead to two games over the Lobos.
Brian Dutcher’s team has not played since the blowout win over Air Force. Here is what the head coach had to say last Saturday postgame about the win and sense of urgency right now.
“I think the veterans know. They know how hard it was here last year,” Dutcher said. “I’ve also tried to tell them we need a greater sense of urgency in February. I’m trying to just pick their urgency up in everything we do. If we can stay urgent and play more consecutive possessions, we’ll have a better chance to win.”

The Aztecs must be alert against the Wolf Pack. They are currently 4th in the conference with a chance to win the regular season title if they can upset SDSU at Viejas Arena. Nevada has never beaten the Aztecs (0-13) at Viejas Arena and is just 1-15 in San Diego. The last win came in 1998, almost 10,000 days ago (9,954 on Sat), via the SDSU media guide.
1st Meeting
San Diego State and Nevada played an incredible game in Reno in early January. The Scarlet & Black escaped with a 73-68 win, led by stellar defense and clutch play in crunch time. Miles Byrd led the Aztecs with 14 points, while four others all finished with exactly 10 points each.
Miles Heide had his signature moment in an Aztecs uniform with a massive finish in the paint to put his team up three points with less than 32 seconds remaining in the game.

Dutcher explained just how good Nevada can be offensively and how both teams will adjust Saturday night.
“Nevada always does such a great job with set plays. With a week off, I know there’s going to be two or three things they run tomorrow that we haven’t seen all year, and that’s just the nature of the game. We’ve worked on some things, too. It’s always fun playing a team after a bye week to see what they’ve added, and usually, whatever they’ve added, they do in the first play or two of the game to try to surprise you. So we’ll know what it is right away. I’ll just look down the bench and nod my head if they have success with it.”
2nd Meeting – What to Expect
Nevada is coming off a 10-point win over Fresno State last Saturday. They are also coming off a bye week, just as the Aztecs are. Before the win over the Bulldogs, the Wolf Pack lost a close overtime game to Boise State on the road. That loss has allowed the Broncos to creep up in the conference standings as they currently sit in 7th with a 7-7 record after the OT loss to UNLV Wednesday night.
Corey Camper Jr. remains the top scorer for the Pack. He averages 17.7 points per game on 49.6% shooting and 44.8% from beyond the arc. He scored only eight points against SDSU last time out, but responded with a 31-point outing against Wyoming the following game. The senior guard is on a tear right now, scoring 32, 35, and 15 points in the last three games, respectively. He shot 73.3% from the field when scoring 32 points in the win over UNLV. In the OT loss to Boise State, Camper Jr. scored 35 on 63.6% shooting. He is a pure hooper.
“This game will be like a race. Both teams are very good offensively,” Dutcher said Friday. “Nevada has lost one game at home this year, which was to the Aztecs, so I’m sure they’re looking for a measure of payback. Both teams are coming off a bye week, so we’ll see if they’ve added anything new offensively, and we’ll see if we add a player or two back.”
Tayshawn Comer is second on the squad in scoring at 13.0 per game and adds 3.9 assists. Elijah Price is third in scoring at 12.7 per game, also adding 8.8 rebounds per contest. The sophomore from Long Beach has scored in double figures in three straight games.
“We definitely know their scouts better,” Miles Heide said Friday about Nevada. “We know their tendencies, but they have Vaughn Weems coming back, and we didn’t play him in the first game. We’re getting the grasp of their full roster, and learning what we have to do to get the win.”
Weems averages 7.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 steals on the season. Weems does it all for the Wolf Pack, and the Aztecs have one more person to try to contain in this game.
Dutcher’s Reinforcements
It’s too early to tell if Magoon Gwath will suit up on Saturday night. The SDSU Flip Card removed Gwath’s injury label, indicating that he could be active and come off the bench. As for Elzie Harrington, his status changed from active and a potential starter to injured and likely to miss the contest.
Some good and potentially bad news for tomorrow night against Nevada
Good: Magoon Gwath is not listed as injured on the SDSU Flip Card, signifying a potential return off the bench against Nevada

There is a good chance that Gwath suits up while Harrington remains out until at least the following weekend. Dutcher would confirm that on Friday during the press conference.
“Whether Magoon can come back tomorrow, that’s the thought. Elzie is probably another week out, and he wants to play, and he probably could play, but we’ll give him another week to try to heal up, and then hopefully have him back after these next two games. We’re excited to get back on the floor. The rest did us good. Now we’ll see if our timing’s where it needs to be as we play a very good Nevada team tomorrow.”
