Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday.

Let’s dive right into the day’s events.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 8-5 vs Albuquerque) (24-29 on the season)

Nick Solak – 2-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Nick Schnell – 2-for-3, Home Run

Jackson Wolf – 5.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 2 K (85 pitches – 58 strikes)

Jackson Wolf and the Chihuahuas conquered the confines of Isotopes Park in a convincing 8-5 win. El Paso’s starting pitcher pitched into the sixth inning, allowing four runs on seven hits. Wolf struck out two batters, and while he wasn’t getting as many whiffs as he does at sea level, his heater played like a sinker at the elevation. While it wasn’t the cleanest outing, Wolf kept his team in the game when he was out there. Garrett Hawkins entered with two runners on and one out, and while he allowed a ground-ball RBI single, Hawkins fanned two to end the inning. The right-hander used all three of his pitches in the outing, picking up strikeouts on the fastball and changeup. Kyle Hart threw two scoreless innings, striking out one batter. David Morgan pitched the ninth inning, allowing a home run but also striking out two.

Pablo Reyes was back in the Chihuahuas’ lineup, and the infielder reached base three times out of the leadoff spot. Nick Schnell hit a solo home run in the third inning to tie the game at one, a 423-foot blast to center field. Schnell needed every inch of that one to clear the dimensions at Isotopes Park. Nick Solak hit a two-run home run later in the third inning, sending a ball into the Isotopes bullpen. Mason McCoy went 3-for-5 with an RBI single, and Will Wagner reached base twice in the game. Jase Bowen hit two singles and drove in the final run of the game.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 11-3 vs Corpus Christi) (18-29 on the season)

Carson Tucker – 2-for-4, Double, Two RBI

Luis Verdugo – 2-for-2, Two Singles, Two Walks, Run Scored

Ian Koenig – 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K (99 pitches – 70 strikes)

Missions starter Ian Koenig threw a career-high 99 pitches across five innings in his latest start. The right-hander out of San Jose struck out seven batters, allowing three runs on seven hits. Koenig’s 70.7% strike rate was the best of any Missions starter this season, as he used his pitches in all quadrants. Koenig also picked up 15 swings and misses, and he ends his May with a 3.76 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 23 strikeouts to four walks in 26.1 innings. Clark Candiotti struck out two in two-thirds of an inning, getting relieved with a runner on second base. Johan Moreno was called on to keep the deficit at 3-1, but Moreno hung a 3-1 slider, and Max Holy took it to left field to score the inherited runner. Andrew Dalquist allowed two runs in one inning, and Andrew Thurman allowed five runs (three earned) in two innings.

The Missions lineup struggled against starter Bryce Mayer, as Houston’s No. 5 prospect held the Missions to one run on three hits. In that span, San Antonio struck out nine times. Carson Tucker got the Missions on the board with an RBI single in the fifth inning, scoring Ryan Jackson. Both Jackson and Braedon Karpathios had one single in the game, and Jackson was unsuccessful in his lone stolen base attempt. Luis Verdugo reached base all three times he stepped up to the plate, scoring one run. Ethan Salas made a pinch-hit appearance, reaching on catcher’s interference and scoring a run on a wild pitch.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 13-5 vs South Bend) (22-25 on the season)

Lamar King Jr – 1-for-3, Double, Two Walks

Alex McCoy – 1-for-4, Double, Sac Fly, Two RBI

Maikel Miralles – 2.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 0 K (67 pitches – 40 strikes)

Right-hander Maikel Miralles’ rough stretch continued against South Bend. While the last time he faced South Bend was a battle of attrition (4 IP, 2 R, 5 BB, 1 K), this outing was not like that. Miralles struggled to finish off innings, as with two on and two outs, Miralles hung a curveball that went for a two-run triple. The third inning saw the pattern continue, as Miralles gave up four hits and two walks. Miralles did not make it out of the frame, and Will Varmette was called on to end the mess. Christian Olivo grounded a Varmette changeup up the middle to score two inherited runners, but Kasen Wells executed a perfect throw to third to end the inning. Varmette returned to the mound in the fourth, and South Bend got two runs across on a two-run single by Josiah Hartshorn that just got past Jack Costello at first. Ty Adcock allowed four runs in one inning of work, striking out two. CJ Widger struck out three in two innings, and Jeferson Villabona threw a scoreless eighth.

The TinCaps’ lineup drew a staggering 11 walks, but only pushed across five runs. Alex McCoy drove in the team’s first run with an RBI double. For McCoy, it was his 17th double of the season. Jake Cunningham scored a run on a wild pitch, and Jack Costello scored on a groundout by Jonathan Vastine. Costello drew four walks in the game. Justin DeCriscio reached on an error in the eighth, scoring a run, and Alex McCoy drew a bases-loaded walk to score the final run. Kasen Wells had two hits in the game, reaching base three times.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 10-4 vs Inland Empire) (27-20 on the season)

Ryan Wideman – 3-for-5, Double, RBI, Two Runs Scored

Yoiber Ocopio – 3-for-4, Double, RBI, Two Runs Scored

Jesus Castro – 4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 5 K (78 pitches – 52 strikes)

Lake Elsinore’s offense posted their 17th five-plus run inning of the season en route to a 10-4 win. Ryan Wideman had three hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Wideman continues to rake at the top of the lineup and picked up his 34th and 35th stolen bases of the season. Yoiber Ocopio also picked up three hits, driving in one run and scoring two. Jose Verdugo hit a triple and an RBI single, scoring two runs. Conner Westenburg reached base twice, stealing home to tie the game in the fifth inning. Westenburg later singled to score Yoiber Ocopio, hitting twice in the fifth inning. Kerrington Cross hit an RBI single in the eighth inning; the former Bearcat has been on fire in May, slashing .356/.525/.644 with three home runs, 15 RBI, and a 19-to-12 BB-to-K ratio.

Jesus Castro pitched into the fifth inning, allowing three runs on six hits. Castro struck out five batters while issuing no walks. The right-hander has fully acclimated to the California League, as he has now struck out 27 batters against three walks in 19.1 innings. Castro allowed a run on a wild pitch in the third inning and two more in the fifth. Castro did not record an out in the fifth, as he allowed three straight hits to open the inning, one of which scored a run. Brandon Langley came on in relief, and while he threw a wild pitch to allow a run to score, he allowed nothing further. Langley struck out five of the next seven batters in two scoreless innings, with the only runner to reach against him coming on an error. Joseph Herrera threw a scoreless seventh on six pitches, and Cal Riehl threw a scoreless eighth inning. Sean Barnett issued two walks and allowed two hits in the ninth, but he allowed just one run. Barnett struck out two in the outing, and the right-hander has struck out 12 (albeit with 12 walks) in nine innings this month.
