MLS Preview: San Diego FC vs. Portland Timbers
MLS

Playing playoff games for San Diego FC can become a reality if they can beat or tie the Portland Timbers this weekend. This scenario comes with very little pressure as San Diego is poised to make a deep playoff run. The Chrome & Azul sit atop the league in standings – something many did not have in their bingo card at the beginning of the season.
Saturday is expected to draw a big crowd, with fans eager for the return of MLS action at home — their first match at Snapdragon Stadium since the July 25 win over Nashville SC. The Portland Timbers aim to perform at their best and present the league leaders with a genuine challenge.
The Timbers head coach, Phil Neville, a legendary Manchester United player back in his heyday, noted that his team have to be at “their absolute best” to get a result at Snapdragon Stadium.
As always, let’s dive in.
Scouting The Timbers
The number one thing SDFC head coach Mikey Varas emphasized when asked his thoughts on Portland Timbers is how well coached they are. The Timbers come into matchday 30 sitting in sixth place in the Western Division (10-7-9).

After a solid start to the season, the Timbers have struggled to maintain momentum. Over their last six matches, they’ve managed just one win, with four losses and a draw. While their possession and patience in build-up play have been steady, goals have been hard to come by — only five during this stretch, including two matches where they failed to score at all.
The departure of forward Santi Moreno, who tallied four goals and seven assists, may be a reason for the offensive decline. The dynamic Moreno found a new home in Brazil as he transferred to Fluminense.
Portland’s attack is mainly comprised of a trio of players who’ve built a great amount of chemistry this season. Forward Kevin Kelsy is the top scorer with seven goals to his name. The center mid and the lifeline of the team’s flow, David Da Costa, leads the team in overall goal contributions. He’s racked up eight assists and four goals on the season. And finally, the ever-so-dangerous Brazilian winger, Antony, who has six goals and eight assists so far.
Despite having a dangerous attacking corps, Portland is missing that spark to put it all together. Perhaps their newest signing will be able to unlock the full potential of the team. Midfielder Matias Rojas joins the green and black from Argentine powerhouse club River Plate. Rojas returns to MLS after tallying 9g/2a in 20 matches (all competitions) with Inter Miami during their MLS Supporters’ Shield-winning 2024 season.

SDFC Injuries and Lineup Updates
The summer transfer window is now officially closed. Tyler Heaps and co. have made the moves they feel necessary to prepare the team for the final playoff push and beyond. The most recent signing, 20-year-old defender Leo Duru, is currently training with the squad. He joins the other young signings, David Vazquez, Pedro Soma, and Aidan Harangi.
Ahead of the Portland match, Varas provided an injury update to the media. Harangi will be out three to four weeks with a shoulder injury. He will be reassessed at that time.
Hirving Lozano rolled his ankle during the Sporting Kansas City match and was held out of the game in San Jose as a precaution. The staff wants him ready and available to play this weekend, and it sounds like he will be a go.
Alex Mighten is dealing with knee pain and is questionable to play this weekend.
With the resurgence of Marcus Ingvartsen, it seems SDFC has the number nine they needed after the departure of Milan Iloski. Ingvartsen will look to continue his strong form in the match against a tough Timbers defense who are not afraid to hold the ball and play out of the back, similar to SDFC’s style.
Pedro Soma has impressed in the midfield, and it would be great to see him get more minutes. It remains to be seen how much playing time he continues to get as he is ramping up to be match fit in order to go a large number of minutes.

Keys to the Game
The Portland Timbers pose a threat in one-on-one situations and thrive in transition. Much like SDFC, they’re comfortable holding possession deep in their own third, using a patient, methodical build-up to advance into dangerous areas.
For San Diego FC, the focus will be on maintaining the high-press style that has served them so well in recent matches. If Portland invites pressure, SDFC will look to capitalize — and this could be an ideal opportunity to introduce new signing Corey Baird. Known for his relentless work rate in the press, Baird has the ability to turn that defensive pressure into attacking chances.
San Diego will look to defend the first-place crown as well as punch their ticket into the playoffs this Saturday, August 23, at Snapdragon Stadium—kickoff at 7:30 pm. You can catch all the action live on AppleTV or listen to the broadcast by Darren Smith and Warren Barton on San Diego Sports AM760.
