After adding a top-tier talent in the first round of the MLB draft, the Padres are set to add more talent in the second round.

With the 60th overall pick in the 2026 MLB draft, the San Diego Padres selected Elliot Lascelles, a shortstop from Upper Canada College High School in Ontario, Canada.

Lascelles is a really intriguing prospect, as he made the Canadian national team. The left-handed hitting infielder has been described as a bat-to-ball artist throughout the time leading up to the draft, posting an absurd 98% zone-contact rate in the MLB Draft League this spring. Lascelles’ stance and swing have been described as unorthodox by scouts and evaluators; to quote MLB Pipeline, “it’s a little bit of an unorthodox setup at the plate, with his elbows far apart and a steep bat path when he swings, but he routinely sends line drives up the middle with a left- to-right-center field approach. He doesn’t always get into his legs, leading to some questions about how much power he’ll have.”

One of Lascelles’ biggest strengths is his ability to manipulate the barrel, getting solid contact to all fields. He has the sort of hand-eye coordination that benefits him at the dish, allowing him to put up long at-bats and wear out opposing pitchers. His power potential is a mixed bag, as in its current state, his swing generates gap-to-gap power but not too much over-the-wall power. The Luis Arraez comps may be coming to some minds, but Lascelles is a unique talent in his own right.

In the field, Lascelles has the tools to hold his own at shortstop, though there are some questions about his ability to remain there as a professional. Lascelles has the range and footwork to handle the position, but his arm strength has room for improvement. His arm strength grades out as average to below-average, which could see him move to the keystone down the line. Lascelles has the speed to be a plus baserunner, with a good baserunning IQ already.

The Padres have three picks left on Day 1.
