The San Diego Padres (46-48) took on the Toronto Blue Jays (45-49), looking to even the series in game two of a three-game set.

San Diego is hoping to get a series win during this homestand, and to make that possible, a win was needed tonight. On the mound, looking to get back on track is Walker Buehler, who has been hit around the last couple of starts. For Toronto, they got the rookie Trey Yesavage, who was a household name in the Blue Jays’ World Series run last year.

Padres snag two in first on Yesavage miscues, but Toronto answers fast

The first inning was one that Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage would like to forget. Walking the first three batters he faced put him in a hole early. He started digging out of it by getting Manny Machado to pop out to the catcher. Then allowed a walk to push the Padres’ first run across. Ty France would then double the lead with a sac fly to right field to bring Jackson Merrill; SD leads 2-0. Yesavage would get Jake Cronenworth to fly out to right to close the opening inning.

An early lead for the Padres ended up lasting just one out. Buehler would walk Kazuma Okamoto and Dalton Varsho to begin the second. Alejandro Kirk would then line a double down the right field line to bring in Okamoto to cut the lead in half.

Next up, Andres Gimenez with a chance to tie the game, and he did his job by grounding out to second to bring in Varsho. Things would only get worse for Buehler as Jonatan Clase slapped a two-run shot over the right field wall, for a Blue Jays 4-2 lead. Buehler would manage to get out of the inning without giving up more damage.

San Diego manages to tack on two in the second and third

After giving up the lead, the Padres stayed on their feet and kept battling. In the second, it began with a one-out walk from Sung-Mun Song. Fernando Tatis Jr would ground out to short for the second out. But Jackson Merrill and Xander Bogaerts would both work walks to keep the inning alive. Manny Machado would then come through with a single to center to bring across Song and Merrill and tie the game at four apiece. Machado would get caught stealing to end the scoring opportunity for San Diego.

In the third, it started with Ty France being hit by a pitch with one out. Jake Cronenworth then lazered a single to center, advancing France to third. Luis Campusano would strike out for the second out of the inning. Cronenworth would steal second during Campusano’s at-bat. Giving a chance for Sung-Mun Song to regain the lead for the Padres. Song would hit a line drive over the shortstop’s head into center to bring in France and Cronenworth to give San Diego a 6-4 lead after four.

Cronenworth pushes one more across in the fourth

Brayden Fisher, the new pitcher for the Blue Jays, started the fourth out with a strikeout of Xander Bogaerts and a pop-up from Manny Machado. However, Gavin Sheets would work a walk, and Ty France got a single to center, moving Sheets to second. Now with a chance to extend the lead to three, Jake Cronenworth came up big with an RBI single dribbled up the middle to give the Padres a three-run advantage over the Blue Jays.

Both teams get big home runs in the sixth

Matt Waldron came in for Walker Buehler and gave the Padres much-needed length after a rough start from their starter. Yuki Matsui would relieve Waldron at the top of the sixth, and it got rocky real fast. After getting Andres Gimenez to fly out, Matsui would walk Jonatan Clase, get Ernie Clement to pop out, and hit Nathan Lukes with a pitch. That would be it for Matsui, as Bradgley Rodriguez would come in to face Vladimier Guerro Jr. Guerro won this go-around as he hit a missile over the left field wall to tie the game at seven.

The Padres once again would have something to say as they responded in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, former Blue Jay Ty France hit a 377 ft no-doubter out of the left to give the Padres the lead back 8-7.

Padres are looking to close it out

Adrian Morejon was tasked with getting through the eighth. It began with a leadoff single from Luis Urias on a groundball to left. He then managed a strikeout of Jonatan Clase, then finished things off with a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Ernie Clement.

The reaper, Mason Miller, came in looking for his twenty-fourth save. Nathan Luke got a leadoff single to right. But that was all the luck Toronto would get. The first victim to go down was Vladimir Guerro Jr, three pitches, strikeout swinging. Next up was George Springer, who lined out to center. To wrap things up, Kazuma Okamoto struck out swinging on three pitches as well. Padres evened the series up at one apiece and got win number forty-seven.

Closing the series

The San Diego Padres (47-48) look to win the home series against the Toronto Blue Jays (45-50). The Padres got German Marquez toeing the rubber against Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. First pitch is at 1:10 PM PST at Petco Park.
