Late afternoon on Tuesday, March 24th, San Diego State Aztecs’ junior guard BJ Davis entered the transfer portal. The guard from Modesto announced via his agency, Envision Sports Group, per Jon Rothstein on X.

Davis came to the Mesa as a high school signee and is considered an Aztec for life. Davis waited his turn and got better year after year on the Mesa.

Davis had some pretty big moments for the Aztecs this past year, and also had some low moments. To end the regular season, Davis and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn of UNLV battled it out. In a game where the Aztecs won 89-86, Davis dropped 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting. That wasn’t even Davis’ biggest moment this past year. In the conference semifinal against New Mexico, Davis hit a game-winning layup to advance the Aztecs to the Mountain West Championship game. The final big-time moment for Davis was a game-winner, a big way to end his time on the Mesa.

Along with some huge games came bad games and bad moments. Part of the reason the Aztecs lost to Grand Canyon on the road was due to Davis missing the front end of a 1-and-1 bonus free-throw attempt. Leading to the fastbreak and foul on Tae Simmons, which led to the Aztec defeat. Despite this, there were far more good than bad from Davis. He was as clutch a player as anyone on the roster.

Now, the question becomes this for Aztec fans everywhere. Will this just be one or two of the Aztecs who enter the portal? Or, will this start an avalanche of Aztecs entering the portal and leaving for bigger programs? San Diego State fans around the program and those interested will see many rumors in the coming days and weeks about potential transfers. Both in terms of players visiting campus, and of those on the team who may or may not transfer.

The one component that fans can count on is that the Aztec NIL money pool could be north of six million. The reason behind the NIL pool growing to six million or more is due to Aztec programs getting access to revenue sharing. With that new access to more money to filter out, fans could see fewer players entering the portal. Or the inverse, the Aztecs being able to pay for quality players from quality programs who will garner power five interest.

The only thing now that Aztec fans can do is sit and await more potential transfer portal additions from the Mesa.
