Padres Down on the Farm: April 21 (Wideman homers twice in Storm win)
Mandatory Credit - MLB

Padres minor league teams were back in action, going 2-1 on Tuesday.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 13-6 vs Reno) (9-13 on the season)
Jose Miranda – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Marcos Castanon – 1-for-5, Two-Run Home Run

Jackson Wolf – 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 2 K (61 pitches – 35 strikes)
El Paso used a seven-run eighth to steal away a win from the visiting Reno Aces’ grasp. The game started out tame before PCL chaos ensued. Jackson Wolf started for the Chihuahuas and pitched into the third inning. Wolf, who has not fully been stretched out to start, threw 61 pitches in 2.2 innings, striking out two but issuing four walks. The left-hander topped out at 92.7 mph while averaging just south of 91 mph on his fastball, an encouraging sign as he averaged 89 mph last season. A 25% barrel rate on eight balls in play allowed Wolf to limit opposing scoring. With two outs in the third, Omar Cruz relieved Wolf, but allowed both inherited runners to score, as well as a run of his own.
Though Cruz was charged with four runs in 0.2 innings, the rest of the Chihuahuas bullpen pitched lights out. Miguel Cienfuegos pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout. Garrett Hawkins recorded more than three outs for the first time since April 10, working 1.2 scoreless innings. Eli Villalobos threw 1.1 scoreless innings, earning the win. His outing on Tuesday marked his third straight scoreless outing.
El Paso got on the board with Jose Miranda’s two-run home run against Reno starter Kohl Drake. Miranda has reached base in eight consecutive games, and is 11-for-30 in that stretch. Marcos Castanon launched a two-run home run of his own out to deep right-center field in the fourth inning, narrowing the deficit to 6-4. Nick Solak brought the Chihuahuas within one in the fifth, as his RBI single scored Jase Bowen. El Paso tied the game at six in the sixth inning, with Rodolfo Duran reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. Duran advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Mason McCoy reached on a throwing error by Anderson Rojas, allowing Duran to score the tying run.
BACK, BACK, GONE! Marcos Castanon homers to the Santa Fe Pavilion to cut Reno’s lead to two in the bottom of the fourth.

The eighth inning saw the Chihuahuas break down the walls, as El Paso rallied for seven against a pair of Aces relievers. Anthony Vilar, who took over for an injured Rodolfo Duran in the seventh, reached base on a single. Jose Miranda doubled to put runners in scoring position against former Red Sox reliever Isaiah Campbell. With one out, Mason McCoy pulled an outside slider over third base and down the line to score both runners. McCoy scored on a sharp ground ball up the middle by Jase Bowen, and Bowen scored on a 103.3 mph single off the bat of Sung-Mun Song. Nick Solak and Pablo Reyes’ back-to-back RBI singles to right each scored a run, and Anthony Vilar put a bow on the scoring with his second single of the inning. El Paso now led 13-6, and Ethan Routzahn closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-2 vs Wisconsin in 6 innings) (6-10 on the season)
Dylan Grego – 2-for-2, Home Run, Double, Two RBI
Alex McCoy – 1-for-3, Single
Maikel Miralles – 3.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R (5 ER), 3 BB, 1 K (82 pitches – 48 strikes)
Fort Wayne’s third-ever home series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers did not get off to an ideal start. Wisconsin jumped on starter Maikel Miralles for eight runs (five earned) in 3.2 innings. The TinCaps right-hander never got a chance to settle in, battling base traffic all game. Wisconsin hit a pair of two-run home runs against Miralles in back-to-back innings. Despite the base traffic, Miralles showed poise under pressure, pitching into the fourth inning. Matthew Watson entered in long relief, four days removed from his professional debut. Watson threw 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out one batter. Watson retired the last six batters he faced, working around a walk thanks to heads-up defense on a line drive that resulted in a double play.

At the plate, Dylan Grego had himself a big game, finishing 2-for-2 with two extra-base hits. Grego entered the game hitting .077, but his 2-for-2 showing included his first High-A home run. Grego hit three home runs in 32 games at Single-A last season, and while the transition has been a struggle so far, he looks to be making adjustments and finding his stroke at the plate. Alex McCoy hit a single in three at-bats, as did Kavares Tears. The TinCaps’ corner outfield duo has been at the center of the team’s success this season, and continues to be integral as the season roars on. Zach Evans returned to the lineup for the first time since April 14, as he has been nursing minor injuries that have not required an injured list stint.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 17-7 vs Visalia) (7-9 on the season)
Ryan Wideman – 4-for-6, Two Home Runs, Four RBI
Truitt Madonna – 4-for-5, Three Doubles, Triple, Three RBI
Winyer Chourio – 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K (70 pitches – 45 strikes)
The Storm broke out the big bats tonight, as they scored 17 runs on 17 hits against the Visalia Rawhide. Lake Elsinore had the foot on the gas from the get-go, per se. Truitt Madonna opened the scoring in the first inning with a double, scoring Bradley Frye. Since getting regular playing time over the past week, Madonna has hit .407 since fellow backstop Ty Harvey landed on the injured list. Madonna finished the game with two more doubles, a triple, and even took home on a strikeout-wild pitch. Ryan Wideman hit two home runs in the game, finishing 4-for-6. Wideman hit a line drive past shortstop in the third inning, and while the Visalia outfielders looked for a dead-ball call, Wideman hustled around the bases to score. Wideman also hit a traditional over-the-wall home run in the eighth inning, his third of the season.
An inside-the-park homer AND an over-the-wall homer in the same game?!

Jose Verdugo drove in two runs on a hit and a sacrifice bunt. Victor Duarte hit his first home run of the season to score Jorge Quintana; Quintana finished with his third multi-hit game of the season. Bradley Frye hit three singles, scoring three runs. Conner Westenburg was back to hitting, as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. The Storm stole six bases in the game, with Jose Verdugo taking three, Bradley Frye swiping two, and Victor Duarte stealing his third of the year.

With so much offense, it’s easy to overlook the pitching staff, but Winyer Chourio continues to have a breakout month. Chourio has been the rock of the Storm’s pitching staff alongside Bryan Balzer. The Venezuelan right-hander allowed two runs on three hits, with one run scoring against him in the second inning and another in the fourth. Chourio struck out six batters, matching his season-high, and earned 11 swings and misses. Joseph Herrera allowed a two-run home run in the fifth, pitching one inning of work. Right-hander Carson Swilling made his season debut, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings despite three walks. Daichi Moriki ended the seventh with a groundout, and made an impressive play with the bases loaded. Despite this, the right-hander walked three, allowing two runs (one earned). Brandon Langley got out of a jam with an impressive 5-4-3-2 double play and worked around an unearned run in the ninth inning to seal the win.
