The San Diego Wave will play their first game in the 2024 NWSL regular season this Saturday, March 23, against the Kansas City Current at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

The Wave had a fantastic 2023 season, winning the NWSL Shield, and began this 2024 season in the best way possible, winning the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup against current NWSL champs’ Gotham FC.

San Diego won that match against Gotham 1-0 with a late-winner by team co-captain Alex Morgan, who headed the ball off a corner kick by new signing Savannah McCaskill.

The Wave had a busy offseason, and new signings McCaskill, Elyse Bennett, Hanna Lundkvist, and Kaitlyn Torpey all played in the Challenge Cup championship game. San Diego also recently signed 16-year-old Kimmi Ascanio, but she is not expected to feature in this match.

Casey Stoney’s team are expected to be among the top contenders in the NWSL this season, but the Kansas City Current also has plenty of potential with head coach Vlatko Andonovski, who arrived late last season. Brazilian striker Bia was a big signing for the current in this transfer window, adding to Kansas City’s already potent attack featuring Brazilian superstar Debinha. Bia began her tenure at Kansas City with an important goal in the 5-4 thriller between the Current and the Portland Thorns.

That victory was a massive way to begin the season for Vlatko Andonovski’s team, who will be looking to improve massively from their 11th-place finish last season.

San Diego has the better team and will have the massive home-field advantage, but Kansas City cannot be underestimated after such a huge victory against Portland. Despite some light rain earlier on Saturday, Snapdragon Stadium is expecting a massive crowd for the season-opener, and the Wave will be looking to start off the regular season much like their recent title victory.
