Early Thursday, May 29, JD Wicker released a statement that the Aztecs are not renewing Shaun Cole’s contract.

Wicker discussed Shaun Cole and his tenure at the school. “I appreciate Shaun’s commitment and contributions to San Diego State baseball. However, at this time, I believe that a change in leadership is needed in the program,” SDSU AD John David Wicker said.

Cole was first the Aztecs’ pitching coach before getting promoted after Mark Martinez retired.

The past two seasons have been dreadful for Aztec baseball.

Cole’s records in his two years were 17-37 and 20-39.

That is unacceptable for a program that has seen many NCAA Regional appearances in its past. It is to be expected that there will be a nationwide search for the vacant position on the Mesa.

According to Kirk Kenney of the San Diego Union-Tribune, these are some names to look out for in the hiring process. USD coach Brock Ungricht, Santa Clara coach Rusty Filter, Utah coach Gary Henderson, and Hawaii coach Rich Hill.

Filter was the former pitching coach of Stephen Strasburg, the former Aztec and World Series Champion. Hill formerly coached at USD and has ties to the area as well.

Expect Coach Filter to be a real strong contender to overtake the SDSU coaching job.
