Early Thursday, May 29, JD Wicker released a statement that the Aztecs are not renewing Shaun Cole’s contract.
Wicker discussed Shaun Cole and his tenure at the school. “I appreciate Shaun’s commitment and contributions to San Diego State baseball. However, at this time, I believe that a change in leadership is needed in the program,” SDSU AD John David Wicker said.
Cole was first the Aztecs’ pitching coach before getting promoted after Mark Martinez retired.
BREAKING: @AztecBaseball has parted ways with head coach Shaun Cole after two seasons with the program, I’m told. Cole and the #Aztecs went 20-39 overall and 14-16 in the Mountain West this season. Expect the Aztecs to allocate increased resources to baseball for the next hire. pic.twitter.com/iP8ZpF9EoF

The past two seasons have been dreadful for Aztec baseball.
Cole’s records in his two years were 17-37 and 20-39.
That is unacceptable for a program that has seen many NCAA Regional appearances in its past. It is to be expected that there will be a nationwide search for the vacant position on the Mesa.
NEWS: San Diego State has fired head coach Shaun Cole after just two seasons atop the program, sources tell @BaseballAmerica. The Aztecs couldn’t get off the ground the last two years and will look to start anew.

According to Kirk Kenney of the San Diego Union-Tribune, these are some names to look out for in the hiring process. USD coach Brock Ungricht, Santa Clara coach Rusty Filter, Utah coach Gary Henderson, and Hawaii coach Rich Hill.
Filter was the former pitching coach of Stephen Strasburg, the former Aztec and World Series Champion. Hill formerly coached at USD and has ties to the area as well.
Expect Coach Filter to be a real strong contender to overtake the SDSU coaching job.
