4/12: San Diego Padres News & Notes (Perdomo Joins Cahill on D.L.)
The San Diego Padres have just begun their long, 162-game journey, but a lot has already happened.
The Padres battled the Dodgers to open the young season, dropping three of four to a strong Los Angeles Dodgers ball club.
After the four game stint, the Friars headed home to play in front of their fans. The Padres played gritty baseball, something that I believe will be a common theme the entire season, in front of potentially sold out crowds at Petco Park.
San Diego took two of three from the San Francisco Giants. After the conclusion of both series, the Padres sat at a respectable 3-4 record. The Padres are now in Colorado, battling the Rockies, where they have split the first two games. Today, Zach Lee will battle former first round pick, Kyle Freeland, in the series finale. Wait, who? It was not a typo, Zach Lee will be towing the slab tomorrow for the Padres. That leads me to the first key-note of the young season.
Perdomo to D.L. with shoulder stiffness
Luis Perdomo, former Rule-5 selection and Padres’ starting pitcher, is headed to the disabled list. The Padres have put him on the 10-day DL due to shoulder inflammation. Andy Green noted after Tuesdayās game that Perdomo felt something in his last bullpen session. Green also noted that this may have begun after his first start, but Perdomo kept it somewhat quiet. Although the Friars have stated that the move is precautionary, it is still worrisome to most Padres fans. Perdomo has quickly become a fan favorite, and easily has the greatest upside moving forward in the future when the Padres hope to contend.
Cahill to D.L. with strained back
On Monday, the Padres announced that another one of their starters, Trevor Cahill, was also headed to the disabled list. Cahill was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained back. Green and the Padres are optimistic that Cahill can be back for his next outing, and only miss one start in his stint on the DL. The new 10-day DL, along with the off day on Thursday, may allow Cahill to do just that.
The Padres added right-handed pitcher, Zach Lee, to the roster in correspondence with Cahill hitting the DL. Lee was drafted in the first round by the Dodgers in 2010. After never really putting it all together in the minors, and only getting one start in the big leagues, the Dodgers parted ways with him. A.J. Preller scooped him up this off-season as a potential project, and for minor league depth. Neither the Padres nor Lee expected him to get his number called this early in the season, but nevertheless, Lee will start the 10th game for the Friars.
Jake Esch promoted
With Perdomo hitting the DL, the Padres needed to call up another arm. That man is Jake Esch. Esch was claimed roughly two weeks ago by San Diego, adding him to their 40-man roster. Esch previously pitched for the Miami Marlins, and now will get a shot, most likely, in the Padres’ bullpen.
Along with the injuries, there has been other newsworthy information from this San Diego ball club. Wil Myers hit for the cycle on Monday night, becoming only the second Padre of all time to capture that feat. Manny Margot, the Padres 22-year-old prospect, has started the season on fire. Margot is hitting .343 with three HRs and has been a nice catalyst at the top of the order. Austin Hedges has begun the season ice-cold. In 23 ABās Hedges has yet to record a hit.
The Friars now look to win the series today in Colorado, and move to 5-5 on the year.
