This Tuesday, January 21, San Diego FC announced the signing of midfielder Luca de la Torre on loan for 12 months from Spain’s Celta de Vigo. The loan includes a purchase option after the 12-month loan.

“We’re thrilled to bring Luca home to San Diego,” SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps said. “Luca’s journey — competing in some of the world’s top leagues and representing the USMNT — speaks volumes about his dedication and talent. But what makes this moment truly special is that he’s coming home to represent the city that shaped him. We’re excited for him to connect with our fans and community in a meaningful way and play an important role in our historic inaugural season.”

The San Diego native developed through local youth soccer clubs including San Diego Nomads and San Diego Surf. The midfielder started his professional club soccer career in 2016 at Fulham before transferring to Eredivisie’s Heracles Almelo.

Prior to the Qatar World Cup in 2022, de la Torre sealed a 4-year deal with Celta Vigo in Spain.

The midfielder was an important asset to the La Liga team, with 67 appearances, four goals, and nine assists across all competitions. In addition to his goal involvement, his creative through balls and crosses helped his team secure their spot in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.

Luca de la Torre has also represented the United States at both the youth and senior levels, earning 24 senior caps including the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers and the 2024 Copa América. The 26-year-old midfielder has also won the Concacaf Nations League in 2023 and 2024.

De la Torre joins midfielder Onni Valakari, who’s loan deal was closed earlier this month.
