This Wednesday, January 22, San Diego FC officially announced Anders Dreyer as the club’s latest signing.

The Danish winger became the second Designated Player in SDFC history, along with splash signing Hirvig “Chucky” Lozano.

Dreyer was signed to a three-year contract through the 2027 MLS season, coming over from Belgian side Anderlecht. The 26-year-old winger will occupy an International Roster Slot and occupies a second of only three Designated Player slots available to the team.

Dreyer is a youth academy product of Danish club Esbjerg and played over 40 games there at the start of his career before joining English side Brighton & Hove Albion. The Danish forward was a journeyman for a while at Brighton, being loaned out to Scottish side St Mirren and Dutch team Heerenveen before finding stability with Danish team Midtjylland.

From 2020-2023, Dreyer played with Midtjylland with a brief stint with Russian team Rubin Kazan. Since 2023, the Danish player has been with Belgian club Anderlecht and has enjoyed relative success at the team.

The 2023/2024 season was a remarkable one for Dreyer, as he scored 19 goals and provided nine assists in 37 games. The 26-year-old winger has represented his native Denmark at the international level since the U-17 level.

After consistent participation at youth levels, Dreyer’s role in the senior national team has not been very present.

San Diego FC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps spoke about what Dreyer can bring to SDFC. “Anders is an exciting addition to our front line who has proven he can contribute goals everywhere he’s been in his career. He has shown his quality at the highest levels of European football, and we’re confident that his talent and work ethic will be instrumental to our success on the field”, said Heaps.

Dreyer is not a conventional Designated Player MLS signing, but he fits the profile of the type of team SDFC is building. Given ownership’s involvement in Danish soccer, it is likely that Dreyer has been scouted for several years now.
