Coors Field- Denver, Colorado

Coming into Sunday’s game, the San Diego Padres had outscored the Colorado Rockies 50-9 in their five wins against them in 2025. The Rockies scored nine runs on Saturday, as San Diego had shut out Colorado four out of the five times they’ve met.

On Mother’s Day, the Rockies would not be held scoreless.

Nick Pivetta toed the rubber for San Diego in a place that has been a nightmare for the pitcher.

Coming into the game, Pivetta had an ERA of 18.90 in 10 innings pitched at Coors Field. The trend continued for the right-hander as Hunter Goodman drove in five runs in the first three innings of the game for Colorado. Pivetta was missing with his location and clearly did not look comfortable pitching. Colorado had put five balls in play over 100 mph at this point.

Pivetta went four innings in the game, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and two walks. He threw 81 pitches in the game, and his ERA climbed to 3.05 on the season.

The Padres scored on Manny Machado‘s RBI groundout in the first but were behind 6-1 after four innings.

German Marquez started the game for Colorado. The 2021 MLB All-Star was 10-4 in his career against the Padres in 19 games and 103.1 innings pitched coming into Sunday’s game.

I'd like this amount to

Marquez retired 17 batters in a row before a Gavin Sheets single with one out in the 7th. That tied his record for batters retired in a row for the pitcher, which he accomplished in 2021 (all-star season). The key to beating Marquez is getting him out of the windup. He gets hit way more frequently and battles mechanical issues when pitching out of the stretch. The Padres simply did not do that in the middle of the game. That was the clear difference in this one.

The Padres’ bullpen was roughed up again on Sunday as they gave up three earned runs in four innings. Wandy Peralta surrendered two earned runs in an inning of work, and his ERA jumped to 7.04 now on the season after a great start.

Gavin Sheets recorded two hits in the game. Manny Machado drove in two runs, but it was not enough for the Padres as they lost 9-3.

Next up for the Padres is a three-game set with the Angels, which starts on Monday.

The first pitch is at 6:40 p.m.

Michael King (4-1, 2.22 ERA) will pitch against Yusei Kikuchi (0-4, 3.83 ERA).
