The San Diego Padres host the San Francisco Giants for a quick two game series.
Nick Pivetta took the mound for the Friars in Game 1 who were hoping to break their four-game losing streak. For San Francisco their ace Logan Webb took the mound to try and help maintain the National League West division lead above the Padres and Dodgers.
It was the 15th sellout of the season for the Padres and the second largest crowd in Petco Park history with a crowd size of 47,345. That is amazing considering it was a Tuesday night.
The Padres prevailed 7-4 in a well=played game by San Diego. They take the first game of an important series with their division rival.
San Diego’s offense came into this game struggling, scoring just five runs in the past five games. That trend turned around in the first inning when Xander Bogaerts and Jose Iglesias singled and brought in a total of three runs. It was much needed and timely for Bogaerts who got the hit with two outs. He had been facing a lot of criticism over his performances lately, so this hit was a great boost for his confidence.
Willy Adames got one back for the Giants with a solo blast off of Pivetta in the top of the fourth inning.
San Diego got the runs back and more in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Luis Arraez (who the Padres very much missed over their four-game losing streak). Manny Machado also drove home a run when he singled bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of San Diego.
Jung Hoo Lee cut into San Diego’s lead with a single in the top of the sixth inning to bring home Willy Adames. This prompted the end of Nick Pivetta’s night.
Nick Pivetta finished his night throwing 5.1 innings allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out nine.
Logan Webb finished his outing throwing five innings allowing five earned runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out six.

Xander Bogaerts stayed hot this game with his first home run of the season. He crushed a line drive that just got over the left field wall for a two-run shot. It was a much-needed home run for Bogaerts, and you can see how much it meant to him with the team rallying around him. Bogaerts spoke on his performance post-game “I mean he has good pitches. He left one right where I wanted it and I put a good swing on it and thankfully it went over the wall,” Bogaerts said.
The Padres will look for the sweep as Michael King is set to face Landen Roupp with first pitch being scheduled at 1:10 pacific time.
