Padres Down on the Farm: June 14 (Perlaza homers/Baez dominant for SA)

Credit: Missions

Padres affiliates went 2-7 in games played on Saturday.
Here is a recap of the games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 8-0 vs Round Rock) (35-33 on the season)
Yonathan Perlaza – 2-for-3, Three-Run Home Run

Forrest Wall – 2-for-4, Two-Run Double
Miguel Cienfuegos – 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K (48 pitches – 30 strikes)
El Paso blanked the Round Rock Express on Saturday, shutting down the steam on the train by a 8-0 final. Miguel Cienfuegos started for the Chihuahuas in lieu of Wes Benjamin (who was placed on the 7-day injured list), and Cienfuegos delivered three scoreless innings in the game. Cienfuegos struck out just one, but kept the ball in the ballpark successfully. Raul Brito and Francis Pena each tossed two scoreless innings, and both Carter Loewen and Jose Espada tossed a scoreless inning apiece.
Yonathan Perlaza had two hits, including a three-run home run in the game, his sixth of the season. Forrest Wall also had two hits, with his two-run double giving the team an early 2-0 lead. Mason McCoy had an RBI single in the second inning, and Bryce Johnson doubled in a run as well. Clay Dungan hit a sacrifice fly, and the team finished 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Jason Heyward was 1-for-4 as the Chihuahuas’ DH, and Tirso Ornelas did not play in the game.
San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-4 vs Amarillo) (34-28 on the season)
Brandon Valenzuela – 2-for-4, Double, Run Scored
Marcos Castanon – 2-for-4, Double
Henry Baez – 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (71 pitches – 51 strikes)
Henry Baez took the mound for San Antonio and tossed a gem for the Missions. Baez pitched six innings with three strikeouts, succeeding at keeping the ball on the ground. The right-hander induced nine ground ball outs and generated two double plays. Baez had the Sod Poodles in knots all night long, and as Sideline Sports Sod Poodles writer and EVT Collaborator Austin Hartsfield noted:
Flat-out effective execution from the Missions’ right-hander tonight. Of the 21 batters that he faced, Baez only allowed 2 counts to get past the five-pitch mark, throwing only 71 pitches in his 6 innings of 5-hit baseball. Even more impressive than that was his ability to not issue free passes and extend innings, drawing a pair of double plays to erase the few runners that did reach. Manuel Peña’s double in the first would be the only extra-base hit that Amarillo would get off of Baez on the entire night—awe-inspiring performance from EVT’s #10 Prospect in the system.
Sod Poodles make him work more than this inning but it’s another scoreless for Baez

The lineup for the Missions was successful early on against right-hander Cesar Gomez. Romeo Sanabria drove in a run in the first inning on a groundout, and Anthony Vilar singled in the team’s second run of the game. Ripken Reyes continued to terrorize the Soddies, as he scored the team’s third run in the seventh, and later gave the Missions the lead on a sacrifice bunt. Kai Murphy had two hits in the game, and Marcos Castanon had two hits in the game before being pinch-run for. This substitution wound up playing a major role in the final outcome, as Wyatt Hoffman entered and relieved Castanon at third base. In the ninth inning and with two outs, the Soddies had a runner on first base against Jared Kollar. Kollar induced a grounder to third, where Hoffman made a low throw to first base that got past Sanabria. The ball got up the line, and Sanabria’s throw with the runner coming home was not in time, as the Sod Poodles walked off the game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps – Lost Both Doubleheader Games vs South Bend
Lost 3-1 in Game One
Brandon Butterworth – 1-for-3, Home Run
Braedon Karpathios – 1-for-3, Double
Isaiah Lowe – 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K (82 pitches – 45 strikes)
Fort Wayne got an outstanding start from Isaiah Lowe in game one, but were unable to drive across more than one run. Lowe’s start was a brilliant one, as the right-hander allowed two hits and one run while striking out six batters. Lowe’s command was not quite where it usually is, as he walked three, but he was able to mitigate the damage with timely strikeouts. Harry Gustin tossed two innings the rest of the way, but allowed two runs in the seventh inning, ultimately taking the loss.
Trice to the rescue AGAIN! We lead by two and are three outs away from a series win.#SBCubs pic.twitter.com/Mrqbyzua0E

The TinCaps’ offense has been rather cold as of late, and the team’s offensive struggles continued. The TinCaps posted only five hits all game, two for extra bases. Braedon Karpathios had a double in three at-bats, and Jake Snider finished with two hits out of the leadoff spot. Brandon Butterworth gave the team their lone run of the game, launching a home run to left field in the sixth inning. The team was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

TinCaps Lost 4-0 in Game Two
Jake Snider – 2-for-3, Two Singles
Brandon Butterworth – 1-for-3, Double
Eric Yost – 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 5 K (73 pitches – 45 strikes)
The TinCaps’ offense went ice cold, failing to score a run in a 4-0 loss. Right-hander Eric Yost tossed five innings for the ‘Caps, striking out five batters. Yost cruised through the first two innings, but in the third was unable to escape a bases-loaded jam with two outs. Cubs center fielder Andy Garriola took a sweeper from Yost to deep left, clearing the bases with a double. Nonetheless, Yost has posted a 2.73 ERA for the TinCaps in 11 starts this season.

The lineup saw the same performers from the first game step up yet again. Jake Snider had a pair of singles in the game, reaching bast twice. Braedon Karpathios had another base hit, this time a single. Brandon Butterworth had the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double, but the team was unable to generate any momentum against Cubs right-hander Erian Rodriguez, who tossed a seven-inning complete game.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 3-2 vs Visalia) (29-33 on the season)
Kaden Hollow – 2-for-3, Double, Walk
Kavares Tears – 2-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Abraham Parra – 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R (0 ER), 3 BB, 5 K (81 pitches – 51 strikes)
Right-hander Abraham Parra tossed a quality start for the Storm, making the most of his opportunity in the rotation. Parra struck out five in six innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. Parra has made four starts in six outings with the Storm and has held opposing batters to a .231 batting average. The right-hander’s command is still a work in process, but he continues to pitch well in his first full chance out of the rotation with the Storm. Adam Conrad relieved Parra, but did not have his best stuff, walking three and allowing one run. Vicarte Domingo was able to escape the jam, tossing the final 2.1 innings of the game.
Abraham Parra was like fresh grapes off the vine. QUALITY.

Offensively, the team was led by Kavares Tears and Kaden Hollow. Tears, who had just changed his jersey number to 21 (his favorite number), conquered the Ad Monster in right field, sending the ball over the wall for a two-run home run. Kaden Hollow had a two-hit game, with a double and walk. Chase Valentine had two base hits in the game, and Lamar King Jr singled and scored a run.

Walfrent Guzman – 1-for-2, RBI Double
Erick Batista – 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 1 K

Alejandro Lugo and Manuel Davila tossed scoreless outings, with Lugo going two innings. Miguel Valdez entered in the sixth but allowed three runs on a three-run homer. The seventh inning saw the Padres’ bullpen collapse. Yovannki Pascual surrendered four hits and a walk, failing to record an out in the process. Jordan Valenzuela allowed five runs while recording two outs, striking out two.
The team’s lineup was rather cold for most of the game. Gustavo Marquez opened the team’s scoring in the fifth inning, driving in two runs on a single. Ismael Javier drew two walks, scoring a run. Walfrent Guzman hit a double in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the Padres’ third run; Both Albert Fabian and Donte Grant were hit by pitches with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to each drive in a run.

Isaac Ponce gave the Padres Gold an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning. Juan Martinez tied the game for the Padres Brown on a fielder’s choice forceout, and Abraham Bastidas capitalized on the failed attempt at an inning-ending double play with a go-ahead RBI single. Alexander Garcia gave the Padres Gold some life with a fourth-inning RBI single, tying the game at two. With the game tied and with runners on the corners, Yorvin Morla gave the Padres Gold the lead with an RBI single to right field, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Padres Gold. Miguel Alvarez was dominant in relief for the Padres Gold, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and striking out three. With one on and two outs in the seventh, Alvarez was relieved by Edwyn Hernandez, who got a game-ending lineout to secure the save and the Padres Gold’s win.
