Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Tuesday. Here is our daily roundup of games played.

Before we begin the recap, if you haven’t already, check out our EVT Monthly Award winners for the Padres’ minor league system, along with the All-April Team. That article can be found here.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 10-9 vs Tacoma) (16-18 on the season)

Rodolfo Duran – 4-for-4, Home Run, Double, Four RBI

Pablo Reyes – 3-for-5, Home Run, Two Doubles, Four RBI

Evan Fitterer – 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 1 K (77 pitches – 41 strikes)

Evan Fitterer allowed four runs in 4.1 innings in a classic PCL shootout, but the Chihuahuas’ lineup homered three times in a walk-off win. Starting with the pitching staff, Fitterer pitched 4.1 innings, picking up only one strikeout. The right-hander picked up seven outs via the ground ball, but five walks plagued his outing. The right-hander walked only three in his last two starts, and seven over the month of April, so the five walks in this outing could be simply a blip on the radar. Miguel Cienfuegos recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning despite allowing an inherited runner to score. Logan Gillaspie pitched two scoreless innings, a much needed bounceback after his series in Albuquerque. When Gillaspie keeps his pitch count economical, it’s a sign his stuff is effective, and tonight he threw 19 pitches over two frames. Eli Villalobos was tagged for three runs in 0.2 innings in the eighth. The final of those three runs came in to score on a home run against Alek Jacob, who allowed two runs of his own in the eighth. Jacob kept the game tied from there, as he pitched scoreless ninth and tenth innings.

Rodolfo Duran stole the show as one of two catalysts in the Chihuahuas’ lineup. Duran finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, a double, and four runs batted in. El Paso’s catcher also stole his first base of the season, and he barreled up three of his four base hits. Pablo Reyes hit two home runs against the Rainiers, driving in four runs in the ballgame. Reyes, coming off a torrid April, continues to force his way into the lineup and will likely see more playing time this week with Sung-Mun Song on the MLB roster. Will Wagner reached base three times, hitting two singles and drawing a walk while playing second base. Nick Solak had three singles and scored two runs, raising his slash line to .326/.442/.407 on the season.

Before the game, Samad Taylor was announced as the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month. Taylor slashed .346/.441/.692 with a 1.133 OPS, six home runs, 18 RBI, and six stolen bases.

San Antonio Missions (Won 10-5 vs Midland) (8-20 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 3-for-5, Double, RBI

Ryan Jackson – 2-for-3, Home Run, RBI, Two Runs Scored

Lucas Giolito – 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 2 K (78 pitches – 50 strikes)

Victor Lizarraga – 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K (60 pitches – 36 strikes)

The San Antonio Flying Chanclas had the ball flying out of the park on Tuesday, as they tallied seven extra-base hits against division-leading Midland. San Antonio got the scoring started early with an RBI double by Francisco Acuna. The third inning was when the Chanclas poured on the damage. Ethan Salas reached base on a single, and Romeo Sanabria walked. Leandro Cedeno got hold of a Mitch Myers cutter out to straightaway center field for his fourth home run of the season. Tirso Ornelas followed Cedeno with a home run off the right-field scoreboard; the ball actually clanked off the upper half of the scoreboard, nearly denting the screen. Ryan Jackson then pulled a high-and-away fastball out to left field for his first home run of the season. Jackson finished with two hits and a pair of walks, while Braedon Karpathios reached base twice and drove in a run. Luis Verdugo had two hits and an RBI in the win, and every starter reached base at least once in the win.

Lucas Giolito’s rehab assignment was moved to the Missions, and he pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs. Giolito, throwing to Ethan Salas, pitched three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Poor defense in the frame did not help Giolito, who allowed five runs in his final inning of work. The right-hander faced 10 batters in the inning, allowing five hits and five runs. San Antonio’s starter picked up nine whiffs in the outing. Victor Lizarraga, who was scheduled to start, pitched five scoreless innings in a piggyback capacity, striking out two. Lizarraga walked just one batter, and this abbreviated outing was his best of the season so far. The right-hander has a 2.57 ERA in his last three appearances after a 20.25 ERA in his first three.

Fort Wayne TinCaps – Postponed vs Beloit

Fort Wayne’s regularly scheduled game vs Beloit was postponed due to rain. The teams will play a Wednesday doubleheader.

Also of note, the TinCaps outfielder/first baseman was named as the Midwest League Player of the Month. McCoy hit .354/.386/.683 with a 1.069 OPS, 5 home runs, and  14 RBI in April.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 8-6 vs Inland Empire) (17-11 on the season)

Truitt Madonna – 1-for-5, Two-Run Home Run

Justin DeCriscio – 2-for-5, Double, RBI

Winyer Chourio – 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K (73 pitches – 44 strikes)

Reigning California League pitcher of the month Winyer Chourio took the ball for the first-place Storm, tossing four innings of one-run baseball. The right-hander walked four, a season-high, but struck out six batters against the 66ers. Chourio picked up 13 swings and misses in his four innings of work, the third-highest total in Single-A baseball on Tuesday. The right-hander has held opponents to a .153 batting average this season, and that remained the rate after his start. Brandon Langley allowed five runs (three earned) in the fifth inning, recording just two outs. The newly-promoted Cal Riehl allowed an inherited baserunner to score, but he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts. In the last three days, Riehl has made two debuts, striking out six batters in 4.2 innings between the ACL and Single-A. Sean Barnett was charged with the loss, allowing two runs in one inning of relief. Barnett walked two and struck out two.

Truitt Madonna got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first inning. The blast was Madonna’s first career professional home run. Bradley Frye singled to drive in a run, reaching base twice in the ballgame. Justin DeCriscio hit yet another double and drove in a run on an RBI single; DeCriscio’s 12 doubles now lead the Storm. Luke Cantwell reached base three times on a single and two walks, while Jorge Quintana had three singles and a run scored. Conner Westenburg hit a triple and scored a run in the loss.

ACL Padres (Won 3-2 vs ACL Angels) (1-2 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 1-for-3, Single, RBI

Fabian Alcantara – 1-for-1, Walk-off RBI Single

Erick Batista – 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K (46 pitches – 29 strikes)

Right-hander Erick Batista fired off three innings of one-run baseball against the ACL Angels, striking out three batters. Batista flashed as high as 95.4 mph on his fastball in the one inning with pitch data, and he also displayed his slider, cutter, and curveball in the outing. Batista kept the ball on the ground, with four ground ball outs and a double play. Jordan Valenzuela walked four in 1.2 innings, allowing one run. Bernard Jose, just assigned to the ACL for a reset, pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts, picking up the decision. Luis De Leon went 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI in the game. Moises Valdez had a leadoff base hit, and Jhoan De La Cruz had his first hit of the season with a single in the first inning. Alcides Hernandez tripled and scored a run, and Yimy Tovar joined in on the triples parade with one of his own. Jhojan Downer, Santiago Contreras, and Jack Mathey had consecutive singles with no outs in the seventh to load the bases. One out later, Isaac Ponce walked to tie the game. Fabian Alcantara, who took over in center field defensively in the sixth, grounded a 92.9 mph single to left field to score the winning run.
