Brewers pummel the Padres 7-1 in series finale

The San Diego Padres (25-17) are looking to claim the series in Milwaukee to start this road trip vs the Brewers (23-17).
After another fantastic finish by the Padres and Gavin Sheets, they look to steal this series on the road vs the Brewers. Griffin Canning will be making his third start for the Padres, going against Brewers lefty Kyle Harrison.

Griffin Canning’s sloppy start puts the Padres in a big hole early
After Griffin Cannings’ first appearance, there were high hopes; these last two appearances have been very undesirable. The first part of the bad start was when the Padres had runners on second and third in the first with two outs and didn’t push any across, and that hurt. Canning would strike out Jackson Chourio after a nine-pitch battle. But he would walk the next four batters he saw and give the Brewers a 1-0 lead early. Then Luis Rengifo hit a single up the middle, bringing across two more for a 3-0 lead. Garrett Mithcell would ground into a fielder’s choice to first, which cut down Vaughn at the plate. Canning would get Sal Frelick to strike out looking to finally close the bottom of the first.
But if you thought that was rock bottom for Canning in this start, you were wrong. In the second, he gave up a single to the left to David Hamilton. Next up was Chourio, and before he could do anything, Canning tried to pick off Hamilton and threw it into right field, and Hamilton advanced all the way to third. Chourio would fly out to shallow left. However, Brice Turang would get the job done, hitting a double in the left-center gap, bringing Hamilton across. Milwaukee leads 4-0. William Contreas would fly out to shortstop for the second out of the inning. Bringing up former Padre Gary Sanchez, who ambushed a ball into the same spot Turang did, bringing him across for another Brewers run and another double, the lead extended to 5-0.
The onslaught would keep going as Andrew Vaughn blooped a single to right to bring in Sanchez, 6-0. That would be all she wrote for Griffin Canning; he finished with a line of one and two-thirds innings pitched, giving up five hits, four walks, six runs (all earned), one error, and getting two strikeouts. Ron Marinaccio would come in and get Rengifo to ground out to him for the final out.

Not much of a battle to get back into it as Brewers take series
The Brewers would add another on in the fourth as Andrew Vaughn doubled to center and Luis Rengifo knocked him in for a 7-0 lead. Then the Padres would finally get one in the ninth before it was over on a groundball force out to short by Sung-Mun Song with bases loaded. When you play an offense as good as Milwaukee’s, you need pitching and offense to be at their best, and today in the series finale, the Padres didn’t have much of either. The Padres, now, since their great April of going 18-7, are now 7-11 in May, with the offense being a major problem game to game. How long till the late-inning heroics can’t save them anymore?
In the end, the Padres fell in the series finale 7-1 to the Brewers. Losing two out of three and ending the first series of the road trip with a real stinker.
Some good news from this one was that the bullpen arms stayed steady. Marinaccio went two and one-third innings with four hits, one run (earned), two walks, and two strikeouts. Yuki Matsui kept his good start coming back from injury, going two innings, three strikeouts, and a walk. And a surprising bright spot was a Matt Waldron appearance out of the pen, going two innings, one hit, four strikeouts. Possible future role for the knuckleballer?
Continuing on this road trip
The San Diego Padres (25-18) will stay on their road trip, going against the Seattle Mariners (22-23). The Padres swept the Mariners in a three-game series earlier this season at Petco Park, so Seattle is gonna be looking for some revenge. In game one, San Diego will have Randy Vasquez on the mound going against Seattle’s Emerson Hancock. The first game is on Friday, May 15th, 6:40 PM PT at T-Mobile Park.
