Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Wednesday.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 12-4 vs Salt Lake) (19-22 on the season)
Pablo Reyes – 2-for-3, Two Singles, RBI
Anthony Vilar – 3-for-4, Two Doubles, Run Scored

JP Sears – 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K (97 pitches – 53 strikes)
JP Sears pitched one of his better outings of the season against Salt Lake, striking out five in five innings. Sears allowed two runs on five hits, but his command held him back from going deeper into the game. Sears issued four walks against the Bees, but worked around them for most of his outing. Yolmer Sanchez got to Sears for a home run, and the other run allowed by Sears came on a single by Jose Siri. Logan Gillaspie entered in the sixth, but ran into trouble out of the gate. A fielding error by Clay Dungan got the leadoff man on base, and after a pop-out, the Bees hit two singles to score a run and put runners on the corners. One out later, back-to-back doubles gave the Bees a 6-4 lead. Gillaspie was relieved by Miguel Cienfuegos, who allowed another double to score the Bees’ fifth run of the inning. Two singles and an out later, the inning ended, but Salt Lake now led 9-4. Cienfuegos threw a scoreless seventh, and Ethan Routzahn entered in the eighth. Routzahn allowed three runs to open the inning, but retired three in a row to limit the damage to three.

The Chihuahuas’ offense scuffled in Salt Lake, as despite nine hits, they were held to four runs. Anthony Vilar posted three hits, including two doubles, and scored a run in the game. Vilar is now hitting .300 on the dot with a .777 OPS after taking over starting duties from the recently-promoted Rodolfo Duran. Will Wagner went 1-for-5 with an RBI single, and Nick Solak hit a single and stole home in the loss. Pablo Reyes has now reached base in all 29 games he has played in, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two singles against the Bees on Wednesday. Jase Bowen hit a sacrifice fly in the game, driving in his 22nd run of the season.
San Antonio Missions (Won 4-3 vs Wichita) (13-22 on the season)
Romeo Sanabria – 3-for-4, Double
Kai Murphy – 1-for-4, Double, Run Scored
Jagger Haynes – 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K (92 pitches – 61 strikes)
Left-hander Jagger Haynes continues to blossom this season, pitching into the seventh inning for the first time in almost two years. Haynes pitched 6.2 innings of three-run baseball, striking out seven Wind Surge batters. The Padres’ No. 20 prospect has found yet another gear since last season, as he has now pitched six-plus innings in three consecutive starts. Haynes has also limited the free passes, something that has been an issue for him in his past. In 18.2 innings this month, Haynes has a 3.38 ERA, 3.43 FIP, 24.3% strikeout rate, and 5.4% walk rate. The left-hander has fared much better against right-handed batters, holding them to a .200 batting average with just one home run.

The Missions lineup held its own without Ethan Salas, as Romeo Sanabria picked up some of the slack with a three-hit game. Sanabria hit a double and two singles, though he did not score a run. Carson Tucker had two singles and scored a run in the game, and Francisco Acuna finished 1-for-3 with a single and a run scored. Both Acuna and Tucker scored on the same play in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Leandro Cedeno hit a fly ball to right field. The ball was caught by right fielder Garrett Spain for a sac fly, but after the throw home, catcher Andrew Cossetti threw to first to try and get an out. The throw was not on target, going into right field and allowing Carson Tucker to score from second. Tirso Ornelas tied the game in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kai Murphy.
One of the wildest plays of the day:

The Missions bullpen held the fort after Haynes’ 6.2 innings. Francis Pena did not have a good outing, walking three straight to score an inherited runner and give the Wind Surge a 3-2 lead. Only two of Pena’s 14 pitches went for strikes, and his velocity was down to 92-95 mph on the fastball. Andrew Moore stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout and pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Michael Flynn pitched a scoreless ninth inning, alternating walks and strikeouts to rack up three of each. Braedon Karpathios drew a leadoff walk in the ninth, and pinch-runner Kai Roberts stole second. Luis Verdugo bunted to move Roberts to third, and the speedy outfielder came in to score the winning run on Francisco Acuna’s sacrifice fly. For those of you keeping track at home like I was, all four Missions runs scored on sacrifice flies. It doesn’t matter how they got them, as the Missions got the win on Wednesday night.
Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 4-3 vs Cedar Rapids) (16-19 on the season)
Alex McCoy – 3-for-4, Two-Run Home Run
Zach Evans – 1-for-4, Triple, Run Scored
Maikel Miralles – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K (74 pitches – 51 strikes)
Maikel Miralles had a bounce-back outing on the road, pitching five innings of two-run baseball. After laboring in his last start against Beloit, Miralles exhibited a much more stoic demeanor on the mound, keeping his focus and striking out six against one walk. The right-hander had his best stuff today, as he generated a season-high 14 swings and misses against the Kernels. Javier Chacon pitched a scoreless inning in his second appearance of the season with the TinCaps, striking out two batters. Will Varmette again threw a scoreless inning, his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance. Over his last six outings, Varmette has thrown 6.2 innings with a 2.69 ERA, issuing just one walk in that span. CJ Widger struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning.
The TinCaps were led at the plate by Alex McCoy, who was thoroughly relieved they were no longer facing Beloit. After going 0-for-18 in the previous series, McCoy finished 3-for-4 with two singles and a two-run home run. McCoy’s opposite-field home run in the eighth gave the team a 3-2 lead. Justin DeCriscio picked up his first High-A hit in the game, going 1-for-4 with a walk, single, and hit-by-pitch as the leadoff man. Kasen Wells had two hits and two stolen bases in the game, while Lamar King Jr hit a triple and scored a run. Zach Evans also tripled in the game, scoring a run on an RBI single by Jack Costello. Costello hit a double in the game as well, picking up his eighth stolen base of the season just for good measure. Jonathan Vastine hit a single and walked into the game.

Leading 3-2 in the ninth, Fort Wayne turned to Clay Edmondson. The first batter he faced reached on an error, and a groundout moved the tying run into scoring position. Yasser Mercedes then hit a 10-hopper to the right side, getting past a diving Jack Costello at first base to tie the game. Edmondson then struck out Rayne Doncon for what should have been the second out, but the ball got past Lamar King Jr, and Doncon reached. The lack of a second out after the punchout was pivotal, as Miguel Briceno hit a deep fly ball to right field for a game-winning sacrifice fly.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 4-0 vs Rancho Cucamonga) (21-14 on the season)
Ryan Wideman – 2-for-4, Two Singles, RBI
Luke Cantwell – 1-for-3, Two-RBI Single
Jesus A. Castro – 5.2 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K (81 pitches – 52 strikes)
One week after setting a season-best in strikeouts, Jesus A. Castro essentially went “want to see me do it again?”. The right-hander struck out nine batters in 5.2 innings, generating 14 swings and misses from Quakes batters. The nine strikeouts were not only a season-high, but a career-high (his previous best was eight). For comparison, Castro struck out a combined nine batters in his first four Single-A starts; he matched that number tonight. Castro has also seen improvements in his command and execution, as he has only issued one walk in his last two starts (11.1 IP). Carson Swilling struck out three batters in 1.1 innings of relief. Joseph Herrera pitched a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout, and Vicarte Domingo threw a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
So Jesus A. Castro can pick up strikeouts, and I dare say, the stuff is rather impressive for a young arm of his age.

Ty Harvey was back in the lineup for the Storm, finishing 1-for-4 with a single. Harvey was involved in the first run-scoring play of the game, hitting into a forceout that saw a throwing error. Thanks to the error, Luke Cantwell was able to score, giving the Storm a 1-0 lead. Cantwell came up to the plate again in the seventh, hitting a two-run single to score George Bilecki and Dylan Grego. Bilecki had himself a day, reaching base twice at the dish and picking up two outfield assists on defense. Ryan Wideman hit two singles in four at-bats, driving in an insurance run in the eighth inning. Dylan Grego drew two walks in his first game back with the Storm, scoring one run.
