Padres Down on the Farm: May 10 (Missions, Chihuahuas’ walk-off wins)
El Paso Chihuahuas

Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Mother’s Day to close out the week.
Here is our daily recap of games played.
El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 7-6 vs Tacoma) (19-20 on the season)
Nick Solak – 4-for-5, Double, RBI
Clay Dungan – 3-for-4, Double, RBI

Evan Fitterer – 4.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K (88 pitches – 55 strikes)
Evan Fitterer threw a season-high 88 pitches over 4.2 innings against the visiting Rainiers on Sunday. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out three batters. Fitterer has seen a downtick in strikeouts since making the transition to a starter, but has succeeded by generating soft contact thanks to his outlier fastball. The right-hander now has a 2.63 ERA this season, and despite a swinging-strike rate below 10%, Fitterer has picked up the bulk of his outs through his pitch-to-contact approach. Triston McKenzie made his first scoreless appearance in over a month, though this comes with the caveat that he was only asked for one out. David Morgan allowed three runs in 0.2 innings on Sunday, as he was tagged for four hits. While Morgan saw his velocity up by one mile per hour on average, he only threw 50% of his offerings within the strike zone. Logan Gillaspie relieved Morgan and threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Gillaspie pitched three times in this series, pitching 5.1 innings of scoreless baseball with a 3:1 K-to-BB ratio. Alek Jacob threw two innings of one-run ball, earning the win with the team walking off the game.
Nick Solak’s strong May continued, as the Chihuahuas’ DH finished the game 4-for-5 with a double, one RBI, and three runs scored. Jase Bowen went 1-for-5 with a triple and a run scored, and he has now reached base safely in nine of his last 10 games. Pablo Reyes hit a single in five at-bats, driving in two runs. Clay Dungan had three hits and an RBI one day after hitting a three-run home run. Dungan went 5-for-15 against Tacoma, one of El Paso’s stronger performers this series. Jose Miranda went 1-for-4 with a game-tying single, and Mason McCoy pinch ran for him in the eighth. This change wound up making all the difference in the 10th, when McCoy singled to score Nick Solak and win the game.

San Antonio Missions (Won 3-2 vs Midland) (11-22 on the season)
Braedon Karpathios – 2-for-2, Double, Two Walks, Run Scored
Ethan Salas – 1-for-3, RBI Single, Walk
Lucas Giolito – 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K (74 pitches – 52 strikes)
Right-hander Lucas Giolito was on cruise control in his latest start against Midland, as he fired off a quality start. Giolito struck out three in six innings of work, picking up seven of 18 outs via the ground ball. The right-hander looks sharp and ready to join the Padres’ MLB staff, and has until the 16th to join the big league club per his contract. Victor Lizarraga pitched three innings in relief, striking out one. Lizarraga was charged with one run on three hits, allowing the go-ahead run in the ninth inning. One item of note with Lizarraga is that his delivery has been much more fluid over the course of this season compared to 2025. He used to have a sort of pause or hitch before moving his momentum plateward, but in 2026, his motion is without the hitch, moving directly to the plate.
Lucas Giolito’s 4th MiLB start since being signed by the Padres was by far his best, finding some rhythm on the dot

The Missions’ lineup had success from top to bottom, as eight of nine starters finished with at least one hit. Ethan Salas slid down to the two-spot, finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI single and a walk. Salas went 8-for-22 (.364) in the series with two doubles and three RBI. Braedon Karpathios had a perfect day at the dish, as the RockHounds failed to retire the Padres’ No. 10 prospect. Karpathios hit .277 in the series, and his two hits today came off the bat at 97 and 107 mph. Kai Murphy had two singles in the win, including a game-tying double in the ninth inning. Carson Tucker sent the Missions fans home smiling, as he inside-out’ed a fastball to right field to win the game.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 9-7 vs Beloit in 10 innings) (16-17 on the season)
Carlos E. Rodriguez – 3-for-4, Three Singles, Two RBI
Rosman Verdugo – 1-for-4, RBI Double, Three Runs Scored
Jamie Hitt – 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K (93 pitches – 56 strikes)
Pitching on an extra day of rest, Jamie Hitt fired off a quality start for the TinCaps. The left-hander pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs. Hitt surrendered just five hits and struck out just as many, picking up five strikeouts in the game. In five starts with the TinCaps, Hitt has pitched to a 4.58 ERA, but his 2.48 FIP and 25% strikeout rate paint a much more encouraging picture. His first full foray as a starter since his 2023 season at Oklahoma is off to a positive start.
The TinCaps lineup did a lot in the early innings. Carlos E. Rodriguez had three singles in the game, driving in two runs. Rodriguez opened the scoring with a third-inning RBI single. After Alex McCoy was plunked, the bases were loaded. Back-to-back balks by Aiden May scored two TinCaps runs. Rosman Verdugo added on the fourth run with a double in the fifth inning, and Rodriguez scored him on an RBI single. Oswaldo Linares stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning with Zach Evans in scoring position, and hit a fly ball single to center field, allowing Evans to score.

The TinCaps bullpen had a rocky performance, as Igor Gil allowed a run in the seventh inning on an RBI double to Aiva Arquette. Kleiber Olmedo pitched a scoreless eighth but allowed the first three baserunners to reach base in the ninth. The TinCaps turned to CJ Widger, but the left-hander allowed a hit-by-pitch to trim the lead to two. Widger struck out Arquette but gave up a game-tying single to Connor Caskanette. Widger struck out two to end the inning, but the game was now tied. Isaiah Lowe was called on in extra innings and retired the first two batters he faced. With two outs, Lowe threw a hanging cutter to Starlyn Caba, who cleared the right field wall for a go-ahead home run. Lowe allowed a double to Brandon Compton, who scored after a pair of wild pitches. While the TinCaps got a run across on a sac fly by Alex McCoy, the tying run was stranded at the plate as the team dropped the series finale.
Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 5-4 vs Inland Empire) (19-14 on the season)
Ryan Wideman – 4-for-4, Double, Run Scored, Five Stolen Bases
Luke Cantwell – 2-for-5, Two Doubles, Run Scored
Carlos Medina – 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (70 pitches – 46 strikes)
Ryan Wideman continues to make plenty of noise down on the farm, as the Padres’ No. 11 prospect went 4-for-4 with a double and three singles. Wideman also left plenty of cleat marks on the infield, as he stole five bases without being caught. With this performance, Wideman tied the Padres franchise record for stolen bases in a single game, set by Alan Wiggins back in 1984. Wideman also scored a run in the game. His 27 stolen bases in 33 games leads the California League by a wide margin, as he is 11 ahead of the second-place holder. Luke Cantwell hit two doubles and scored a run. In seven games this month, Cantwell is hitting a casual .500 with a 1.182 OPS. Truitt Madonna had an RBI single in the eighth inning, and Kerrington Cross pulled off a successful safety squeeze to give the Storm a 3-2 lead. A day after his first home run of the season, Jose Verdugo tacked on another run with an RBI single to center field.

Carlos Medina closed out the rotation’s strong week with four shutout innings. Medina struck out five batters in his start, allowing just three hits. With his performance today, Medina was the third straight Storm starter to not allow an earned run. Medina now has a 2.35 ERA on the season, and as a starter, he has pitched to a 1.98 ERA with 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. Cal Riehl struck out three of six batters faced in 1.1 scoreless innings, and Carson Swilling struck out two in 1.2 frames. Swilling loaded the bases in the seventh and allowed a two-run single to Inland Empire’s Dervy Ventura. Joseph Herrera entered in the eighth up 4-2, but promptly allowed a game-tying home run to Grant Jay. Back out for the ninth inning, Herrera hit Connor Dykstra to open the frame. After a walk and a forceout, Ricardo Cova singled to left field, scoring Brady O’Brien and giving the 66ers the win.
What a week for the @Storm_Baseball starting rotation!
