The San Diego Padres are getting crippled by injuries.
With Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove already down with arm issues, the Padres have lost Jackson Merrill, Brandon Lockridge, Jason Heyward, and Luis Arraez to injuries in the first few weeks of the season. The team limped into Detroit hoping to get off on the right track against the Tigers.
That did not happen, as Randy Vasquez was wild in and out of the strike zone on Monday. The righty only lasted two innings in the game, giving up six earned runs on five hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch. Vasquez threw 68 pitches on the night and was charged with a loss.
The Padres battled in the game, but ultimately fell 6-4 to Detroit.
The bullpen threw six shutout innings to keep the Padres in the game, but the offense could not pull through in the clutch. San Diego was 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position as a team and struck out seven times in the game.
Gavin Sheets led the team with the bat as he went 2-for-4 on the night and hit the ball well all four times at bat. He slugged his third homer of the season in the 5th inning. Sheets is hitting .344 on the season and owns a .945 OPS for the Friars. He played first base on Monday, and he may be playing a lot there in the next week, as Luis Arraez was placed on the 7-day I.L. with concussion problems.

Oscar Gonzalez went 2-for-4 in the game and drove in a run for the Padres. Gonzalez is playing well since his promotion from El Paso. The 26-year-old outfielder is someone to monitor moving forward in regard to playing time.
Logan Gillaspie, Wandy Peralta, and Yuki Matsui threw the six shutout innings out of the pen for the Padres. San Diego did not need to use any high-leverage guys, which is important as the two teams finish the series in the next two days. The nucleus of the Padres’ bullpen will be well-rested.
The Tigers’ bullpen pitched flawlessly in the game, throwing 4.2 shutout innings after starter Keider Montero left in the 5th inning.
San Diego and Detroit will play tomorrow in Game 2 of the series.
Nick Pivetta (3-1, 1.57 ERA) takes on Jack Flaherty (1-1, 2.53 ERA).
The first pitch is scheduled for 3:40 p.m.
