In a wild game filled with big hits, timely offense, and ineffective pitching, the San Diego Padres were unable to secure a sweep, losing to the Marlins 10-8.

One day after coming back from a 6-0 first-inning deficit, the Friars were unable to hold multiple leads as their pitching failed to come through despite multiple comebacks.

Both teams started the game scoring a run apiece, the Padres in the bottom of the second off a Gavin Sheets RBI-single and the Marlins in the top of the 3rd off an Agustin Ramirez home run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Friars continued with what has been their bread and butter, steady hits that keep the line going. Five runs later, on two RBI singles, an RBI double, and a sacrifice fly, the Padres were in great shape at 6-1.

Unfortunately, the Marlins answered back in dramatic fashion with five runs in the top of the 5th on multiple home runs, tying the game at six runs. Yuki Matsui gave up a lead-off double to Javier Sanoja in the top of the 7th before a Jason Adam wild pitch led to him scoring.

In the bottom of the 7th, it was Gavin “Holy” Sheets who gave the Friars the lead on a two-run blast. A minor league signee back in February, Sheets blasted his tenth of the year, good for second place on the Padres. It’s hard to imagine where the team would be without the man who has become their best clutch power hitter.

Unfortunately, Jason Adam, who was clearly not his normal sharp self, and Wandy Peralta were unable to hold the lead in the 8th inning.

For a team that had shown big improvement in the past few games, their bullpen utterly collapsed as key contributors were either unavailable or ineffective. Peralta pitched a scoreless 9th, but the damage had been done. The Friars were unable to come back one last time and went down in order in the 8th and 9th innings.

Kyle Hart started but could only go 4 2/3 innings before running into trouble and being removed. He gave up six hits and five total runs, including two home runs, with only a single strikeout.

The Padres are off on Thursday but back at it on Friday, starting a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
