Padres minor league affiliates went 2-2 on Tuesday.

Here is a recap of the games’ events, along with the weekly roster roundup.

Roster Roundup:

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 9-5 vs Sacramento) (26-26 on the season)

Tirso Ornelas – 2-for-4, Inside-the-Park Three-Run Home Run

Trenton Brooks – 4-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Jackson Wolf – 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 9 K (88 pitches – 53 strikes)

Left-hander Jackson Wolf has both his funk and his swagger back, twirling a gem against the Sacramento River Cats. Wolf struck out a season-high nine batters in five innings. Wolf walked three but held the River Cats to two hits, one of which was a home run. So far, the left-hander has posted a 3.46 ERA and 4.37 FIP in 20.2 innings with El Paso this season, and could be climbing back up the depth chart. Also of note on the mound was the presence of Bryan Hoeing, as the Padres right-hander made a rehab appearance, tossing 20 pitches in 0.1 innings of work.

The offense produced with a bang, as three players had multi-hit games, and three had home runs as well. Tirso Ornelas and Trenton Brooks were the game’s offensive standouts. Ornelas finished with two hits and four RBI, most notably hitting a three-run, inside-the-park home run. Trenton Brooks also hit a homer, but finished a triple shy of the cycle as well. Yonathan Perlaza homered in the game, and despite a 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position, El Paso had themselves productive outs to bring runs across.

San Antonio Missions – Rained out vs Arkansas

The Missions’ regularly scheduled game against the Arkansas Travelers was rained out on Tuesday. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, with Henry Baez scheduled to start one of the two games.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 4-1 vs Great Lakes) (22-23 on the season)

Kai Roberts – 1-for-5, Double

Leo De Vries – 1-for-4, Single

Ian Koenig – 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 K (89 pitches – 54 strikes)

Ian Koenig threw five innings against the Great Lakes Loons, allowing four runs on five hits, including two homers. The right-hander’s fastball was knocked around, with both home runs coming off fastballs up in the zone. Koenig has lived in the strike zone this season, and while his pitches all project at around average or slightly-above-average, the right-hander uses a blend of command and movement to keep opposing lineups off the board. Koenig was relieved by Josh Mallitz, who finished the game with three scoreless innings, striking out five. Mallitz has shown strikeout stuff since his time at Mississippi, and has pitched quality ball this month, tossing 12.1 innings with an 18-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The offense was mostly quiet against Loons pitching, with five hits scattered in nine innings. Leo De Vries had one hit in four at-bats, while Kai Roberts had the team’s lone extra-base hit with a double in the ninth inning. Roberts isn’t a player known for his power or slug, but if he can bring some thump to the table as a leadoff man, the team might have yet another offensive tablesetter, especially after Brandon Butterworth’s early departure on Sunday. Jose Sanabria had a single which led to a run scoring, thanks in part to an error from Loons infielder Logan Wagner. Kaden Hollow singled in the game, as did Brendan Durfee, who extended his hitting streak to five games.

I'd like this amount to

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 3-0 vs Stockton) (20-26 on the season)

Kasen Wells – 1-for-3, RBI Single

Zach Evans – 1-for-4, Single, Reached on Error

Will Varmette – 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K (71 pitches – 45 strikes)

The Lake Elsinore offense put up productive at-bats, despite tallying just four hits. Singles from Yendry Rojas and Colton Vincent put runners on first and second, and a passed ball moved the runners up. Kasen Wells sharply grounded a single to left field, scoring Rojas. Vincent scored on a wild pitch from Ports starter Ryan Magdic, and the Storm led 2-0 after three. The team added on a third run in the sixth inning, as after a Kavares Tears fielder’s choice and walk to Victor Figueroa, Zach Evans stepped up to the plate. Evans grounded a ball to third base, and Myles Naylor rushed the throw to first, allowing Evans to reach and Tears to score.

The Diamond at Lake Elsinore seems to be Will Varmette’s comfort zone, as the right-hander pitched another gem on the team’s home turf. Varmette tossed six innings, striking out four batters. The former Wallace State alum has been dynamite at home in May, tossing 14.1 innings and allowing only one earned run (0.62 ERA, 1.75 FIP). His road stats are not as strong (7.71 ERA, 4.64 FIP) in seven innings of work, but Varmette has still shown impressive ground ball and strikeout rates in his first season, seeing time mostly as a starter.

“It’s actually our first win on a Tuesday at home,” manager Brian Burress told EVT postgame. When asked about his starter’s performance, Burress commented, “I thought his ability to attack the zone. He had a really good day and threw a lot of strikes. When he can do that, he usually does pretty well.”

ACL Padres (Lost 11-10 vs ACL Dodgers) (5-14 on the season)

Donte Grant – 2-for-3, Double, RBI

Jesus Castro – 2-for-5, Two Singles, Two RBI

Yovannki Pascual – 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K

In a back-and-forth affair, the ACL Dodgers walked off the ACL Padres in the bottom of the ninth, sealing an 11-10 loss for San Diego’s affiliate club. Yovannki Pascual started for the Padres, and while his lively arm can reach high-90s in velocity, he has yet to fully find his control. Pasucal allowed a two-out walk and single before being pulled, and both runners scored on a base hit off new reliever Jimmy Reyes. Tanner Smith made his second professional appearance, allowing three unearned runs in 0.2 innings. Jordan Valenzuela turned some heads in Arizona, tossing 2.1 innings of shutout baseball. Manuel Davila took the loss, allowing three runs in 1.2 innings, striking out three in his outing.

The offense had contributions all over the lineup. Donte Grant was 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot, driving in a run on a hit-by-pitch. Yimy Tovar had an RBI single while also walking twice in five plate appearances. Gustavo Marquez broke out of a 3-for-33 slump to open the season with his first ACL multi-hit game, driving in his first run of the season. Eguy Rosario drove in two runs on a single, and Alcides Hernandez drove in the tying run on a ninth-inning single. Yoiber Ocopio had a single and walked twice, scoring two runs in the ball game. Jesus Castro finished 2-for-5 with two singles and two RBI in the loss, raising his season average to .316.
