After taking two out of three from both the Marlins and the Pirates, the San Diego Padres traveled to the Bay Area to take on the San Francisco Giants.

The Padres started the night a game ahead of the Giants in the NL West standings and trailing the Dodgers by two games.

The Friars have already beaten the Giants twice at Petco this season. This game and series mark 14 of the next 17 games within the division for the Padres.

The Giants gave the ball to their ace Logan Webb, who’s posted a 1.39 ERA at home. Stephen Kolek got the ball for the Friars after a rough outing last time. In his last outing, Kolek gave up six earned runs to the Marlins, but still managed to secure the win. Tonight, it took the Padres until the 10th inning to score. And that’s all they needed.

Before the game, the Padres got some good news on Gavin Sheets. In the last game on Sunday, Gavin Sheets was removed from the game because he ran into the left field wall. He went into concussion protocol but cleared it. On a Padres team without much thump, Sheet’s diagnosis, or lack thereof, boosts the team. On Lou Gehrig Day, the Padres looked to start another series with a win.

The bottom of the second inning got hairy for Stephen Kolek. He started the inning with a walk, then hit LaMonte Wade Jr. on the hand (Casey Schmitt would replace him during the third inning), and another walk. Kolek induced a groundball that Iglesias (playing third today) threw to home for the force out. Kolek got out of the inning with a 5-4-3 double play.

It should be noted that Elias Diaz threw a back pick to second base, and the runner was called safe. The replay showed the runner’s foot came off the base, but New York failed to overturn the call.

Stephen Kolek came out of the game in the sixth with two outs. He surrendered no runs and only three hits. Morejon came on and got a groundout to end the inning. The pitching duel continued into the seventh. Logan Webb threw a nine-pitch seventh to complete seven shutout innings for the Giants.

Webb worked into the eighth and managed to get out of it courtesy of a pop-up in foul ground by Machado. Jason Adam worked the eighth and got out of trouble with two runners on and one out; he got back-to-back strikeouts to end the Giants’ threat.

On their previous road trip, the Giants scored 18 runs across nine games, and their struggles continued into Monday night. The Padres, on the other hand, have not hit Logan Webb well, and that trend stayed true tonight as well. Suarez used 11 pitches to get through the bottom of the night, including a strikeout of Jung Hoo Lee to end the inning.

The Padres broke the deadlock with an Iglesias sac-fly that scored Jake Cronenworth. Tyler Wade bunted Cronenworth over to third on the first pitch of the inning.

The Padres went to the bottom of the 10th with a 1-0 lead. Suarez came into the inning, and Jung Hoo Lee was bunted over on the first pitch. Suarez got two terrific defensive plays to end the game—one by Iglesias and one by Arraez. The defense shined bright in the Padres 1-0 win over the Giants.
