In game one of the series, the San Diego Padres pulled off a 1-0 victory in 10 innings.

The second game would end in extras as well, and the Padres came back for a 3-2 win, again in 10 innings. We figured out a way to get the win,” Mike Shildt said after the game.

Both the Giants and the Padres are struggling offensively at the moment. The theme continued on Tuesday as one swing of the bat accounted for all the runs in the game up until the 9th inning.

Game two of the three-game series saw the Padres call up a minor league starter. Ryan Bergert was recalled from the minors to make the start on Tuesday. Bergert had yet to allow a run in 2025 in four innings pitched at the major league level coming into the game. Bergert ended up going five innings in the game, surrendering two runs and six hits. He threw 83 pitches in the game. “He was fantastic,” Mike Shildt said.

Bergert showed some issues with commanding his pitches and was hit hard in the bottom of the third, allowing two doubles and a homer to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. Heliot Ramos deposited a hanging slider over the wall in center with a 106.5 mph drive. Thankfully, for the Padres, an excellent relay throw nailed Wilmer Flores at the plate to end the threat in the inning.

Opposing Bergert was Landen Roupp, who had recorded a 3.54 ERA in 11 games for San Francisco. Roupp came into the game on Tuesday with a 2.92 career ERA against the Padres in five career games, pitching primarily out of the pen. Roup went 6.1 shutout innings, holding the Padres to four runs and two walks while striking out five in the game.

The Padres strung together base runners against the rookie pitcher, but failed to capitalize. It was frustrating to watch as the Padres stranded nine base runners through the first eight innings. The team went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position during that span.

In the 9th, the team received a one-out infield hit off the bat of Brandon Lockridge. Elias Diaz would strike out on a 3-2 slider from closer Camilo Doval. Fernando Tatis Jr. walked to put runners on first and second with two outs.

Luis Arraez grounded out earlier in the game with the bases loaded and stepped up to the plate with a chance to redeem himself. A wild pitch (and a stolen base) put the tying run on second base for the Padres. Arraez worked a walk, bringing Manny Machado to the plate, who was 3-for-3 on the night coming into the at-bat.

Machado promptly singled off Doval to tie the game for the Padres. Jackson Merrill would strike out to end the 9th inning, but the damage had been done for San Diego. Macahdo praised his teammates for the quality of their at-bats late in the game. “Some good at-bats from the whole group,” Machado said after the game on the TV broadcast. “I know he has to come to me… I just tried to put a good swing on it,” Machado said.

Sean Reynolds ended up throwing three shutout innings for the Padres and allowed the game to be within reach for San Diego. Reynolds struck out two and only allowed a walk in the 45 pitches he threw on the night. It was a great night for the right-hander. “He battled his tail off,” Shildt said about his reliever.

Jake Cronenworth singled in Jackson Merril with two outs in the top of the 10th to give the Padres a 3-2 lead.

With Robert Suarez unavailable, Jeremiah Estrada came on to try to close out the game for San Diego. Suarez threw two innings in Monday’s extra-inning win and was given the night off.

Suarez would get the job done, and the Padres would take the first two from their division rival and also claim victory in the series.

Up next for the Padres is game three on Wednesday against the Giants.

Nick Pivetta (6-2, 2.74 ERA) will pitch for San Diego. Kyle Harrison (1-1, 2.51 ERA) toes the rubber for the Giants.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6:45 pm.
