Michael King took the bump for the Padres on Wednesday, facing off against the flamethrowing Jacob Misiorowski and the Brewers.

Both pitchers have been outstanding this season, each carrying a sub-3.00 ERA, while Misiorowski entered the game leading all of baseball with 70 strikeouts.

Padres’ offense flounders for most of the game

The Padres once again struggled at the plate for most of the game. Fernando Tatis Jr. mustered two weak hits, including an infield single in the first and a bloop into center in the third. Gavin Sheets and Ty France both hit singles in the second, but Rodolfo Duran could not deliver his first MLB hit or RBI and struck out to end the inning. The Padres failed to record a baserunner from innings four through eight.

Both starters shine early

Michael King was able to match Misiorowski’s performance through four innings, eventually giving up his only run in the fifth. After a single from Sal Frelick and a bunt single from Joey Ortiz, King managed to get a groundball out of the Brewers’ leadoff hitter Jackson Chourio. Manny Machado fielded it cleanly, but hesitated to throw the ball to second base, leading to more hesitation from Tatis Jr., ultimately culminating in just one out instead of a double play. This cost the Padres a run, as Brice Turang grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing the runner on third to score instead of ending the inning. This gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead that looked like it might be enough to win until the ninth.

King was able to work for one more inning before Jeremiah Estrada came in to relieve him with two outs and two on in the sixth. Estrada got out of the jam and remained in to pitch the seventh. After a tough groundball got by Tatis Jr. for a single, Estrada got Turang to fly out to center, and Merrill was able to throw out the aggressively tagging Chourio at second.

Jacob Misiorowski was tearing through the Padres’ order and originally came out to pitch the eighth inning. However, he was pulled while warming up with an apparent injury. He finished the day with seven innings on 93 pitches, ten strikeouts, and allowing just four hits. Aaron Ashby, nephew of former Padre Andy Ashby, pitched a scoreless frame in relief to keep the game at 1-0 Brewers.

More late-game magic for the Padres

After Jason Adam pitched a scoreless eighth, the Padres ice cold offense had one last chance to end the shutout. The inning started with a Tatis Jr. groundout and Machado lineout, bringing up Miguel Andujar. He took Abner Uribe‘s first pitch just over the glove of Turang at second for a two-out single. Xander Bogaerts worked a six-pitch walk, moving the pinch runner Bryce Johnson up to second as the tying run. Up to the plate stepped Gavin Sheets. The big lefty, who seems to have a knack in situations like this, crushed a high slider over the wall in right-center, giving the Padres a sudden 3-1 lead with two outs in the ninth.

Mason Miller came in to close out the game for the Padres, earning two strikeouts to finish off the win despite giving up a leadoff single.  Despite the offense once again starting slow, the Padres’ strong bullpen continues to keep the team in games late enough for just one big inning to do the job.

Thursday Preview

The Padres will look to take the rubber match in Milwaukee tomorrow with an early 10:40 a.m. PDT start time. Griffin Canning will look to bounce back against the young left-handed Kyle Harrison.
