The San Diego Padres (62-57) and the Milwaukee Brewers (74-44) began a three-game series at Petco Park starting on Monday night.

Milwaukee entered Monday with the most wins in the sport and taking seven of their last 10 games. San Diego also came into the series being winners of seven of their last 10, taking the rubber match on Sunday Night Baseball against the Houston Astros.

Casey Mize made his first home start at Petco Park, looking to rebound from his 3 1/3 inning, eight earned run appearance five days ago in Arizona.

Logan Henderson made the start for the Brewers. Through 10 starts in 2026, the righty Henderson owns a 2.70 ERA, with a WHIP of just 0.90.

No Bogaerts

Xander Bogaerts is not featured in the starting lineup, as Sung-Mung Song makes the start at shortstop on Monday.

Mize much better the second time around

Casey Mize’s second start as a Padre was much, much better than his first. The Yelich two-run home run in the second was all that Mize would allow during the six innings that he went. Mize surrendered just five hits and two walks while striking out six. The first overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft got six swings and misses over an 83-pitch outing, throwing 56 of them for strikes. This type of outing from a trade acquisition against the best team in baseball is a massive win, even if Mize exited the game with the team trailing.

Who else but Jackson Merrill? Jackson Merrill launches a Logan Henderson changeup to dead central to give San Diego their first lead of the game. Make it three straight games with home runs for Merrill.

M&M close it out

Once the Padres went on top going into the eighth inning, it was Adrián Morejón and Mason Miller time for the Padres.

Morejón struck out Brice Turang on a sinker on the outer edge for the first out of the eighth. Jackson Chourio singled to left for his third hit of the game. That baserunner became erased on a 4-6-3 double play grounded into by Jake Bauers.

Mason Miller pitched the ninth inning and grabbed the save. Andrew Vaughn and Garrett Mitchell both got out to grab an easy first two outs for Miller. Miller then couldn’t locate the zone to William Contreras, in which he’d walk, then get base ran for the speedy Brandon Lockridge. Lockridge got thrown out by Freddy Fermin to end the ballgame. Christian Yelich, the only producer of runs for the Brewers on the night, got left at the plate.

Tuesday at Petco

Both clubs will play on Tuesday for the middle game of this three-game series. San Diego will send Walker Buehler and his 5.07 ERA to the mound to make his 24th start of the season. Milwaukee will have left-hander Kyle Harrison on the mound. Harrison has a 2.84 ERA through 88 2/3 innings in 2026. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM PT.
