Padres affiliates went 3-1 on Sunday.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Won 7-4 vs Reno) (47-66 on the season)

Ethan Salas – 2-for-5, Home Run, Two RBI

Carlos D. Rodriguez – 2-for-5, Triple, Three RBI

Joe Musgrove – 3.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K (53 pitches – 42 strikes)

A potential September battery was on display in El Paso on a Sunday afternoon. Joe Musgrove took the hill for the Chihuahuas, making his second rehab start. Musgrove was locked in the zone, partly due to an aggressive plan of attack and partly due to the man behind the dish, 20-year old Ethan Salas. Musgrove threw 3.1 innings on 53 pitches, 42 of which landed for strikes. Despite recording just two whiffs, the right-hander threw 79.2% of his pitches for strikes, averaging 94.7 mph on his four-seam fastball. Musgrove’s breaking pitches all graded out as above average despite the altitude (4400-4500 feet above sea level).

Jhony Brito threw 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs. While Brito did not record a strikeout, he continued to generate subpar quality of contact with his changeup and slider. His fastball, not so much (0.619 xWOBACon). Johan Moreno struck out one and walked two in one-third of an inning, flashing a changeup along the way. Ethan Routzahn pitched 1.2 innings of one-run baseball in relief, earning a hold. J.P. France made his second Chihuahuas appearance, and the right-hander struck out one in a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Ethan Salas made quite a bit of noise on Sunday, and not just because he was teaming up with Musgrove for the first time since the right-hander’s start against Great Britain (yes, we checked). Salas had a strong day with the bat, going 2-for-5 with his second home run of the week. Over his first nine games as a Chihuahuas, Salas is hitting .333 with a 1.086 OPS, two home runs, 12 RBI, and a 7:6 K:BB ratio. Carlos D. Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with a triple and a single in the contest. The Venezuelan outfielder hit a go-ahead bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning, kicking off a six-run rally. Blake Hunt went 1-for-3 as the Chihuahuas’ DH, hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning. Hunt now has nine home runs across his first 30 games in El Paso. Dustin Harris drew two walks in the game, scoring a run.

San Antonio Missions (Won 7-4 vs Springfield) (49-59 on the season)

Jake Cunningham – 2-for-3, Double, Two RBI

Brendan Durfee – 2-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI

Matthew Watson – 4.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K (82 pitches – 59 strikes)

San Antonio took a series win against Springfield for the first time since July 2021, taking four of six games this week. Matthew Watson pitched 4.1 innings of three-run baseball against the Cardinals, striking out two. Watson had to work hard against the top of the Cardinals’ lineup, but was able to generate five ground ball outs. He also stranded four baserunners, and no runners scored. Igor Gil picked up three outs in relief, though his recent scoreless streak came to an end after a bequeathed runner scored against Francis Pena. Despite allowing four baserunners in one inning, Pena earned the win. Bernard Jose pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, and Tucker Musgrove earned his first career Double-A save, closing out the win. 

The Missions rode a pair of home runs and a late go-ahead hit from Carson Tucker to earn the series win. Brendan Durfee opened the scoring with a two-run home run, his third of the season. Durfee was one of two Missions batters to record more than one hit in the contest, and the 25-year old has a .751 OPS in limited playing time in August. Jake Cunningham also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a double and walk in the contest. The right-handed hitter also hit a two-run single in the sixth inning, one of two by the Missions in said frame. Carson Tucker had the other two-run single, driving in the tying and go-ahead runs off Springfield reliever Jose Davila. Kai Roberts reached base twice, swiping two bases. Albert Fabian scored two runs, and Luis Verdugo scored once in the win.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Lost 8-2 vs West Michigan) (46-60 on the season)

Kerrington Cross – 2-for-4, RBI Single

Alex McCoy – 1-for-3, Single, Two Runs Scored

Abraham Parra – 3 IP, 5 H, 6 R (5 ER), 4 BB, 1 K (80 pitches – 40 strikes)

Fort Wayne dropped their fifth contest in six games against West Michigan this week, falling to three games out of a playoff spot in the Midwest League East. Abraham Parra started for the TinCaps, but failed to record an out in the fourth inning. The right-hander allowed six runs (five earned runs) in three-plus frames. Command and control remain areas in need of growth, as only 40 of Parra’s 80 pitches were strikes. The right-hander also walked four batters (against one strikeout), which was a microcosm of his outing.

Will Koger threw 2.1 scoreless innings, striking out two. Koger issued four walks in his outing; he has now walked 23 in 16.1 innings since joining Fort Wayne. Braian Salazar matched a season-high in outs recorded (eight) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief in the game. The left-hander has now pitched five consecutive scoreless appearances, spanning nine innings. Carlos Medina recorded two outs in the ninth inning, giving up a two-run home run. Will Varmette retired his lone batter faced in the ninth.

The lineup was slowed to a halt by West Michigan starter and former Indiana State pitcher Conner Fenlong, who held the team to one hit in 5.1 innings. Fort Wayne’s lineup fanned six times against the Whitecaps’ starter. Ryan Wideman was called out on strikes in the first inning and was ejected from the contest from disagreeing with the call. Kerrington Cross had two singles in the game, and his seventh-inning single put the TinCaps on the board. Cross’s ninth-inning single scored Alex McCoy yet again. McCoy scored two runs in the game, and Luke Cantwell drew the team’s lone walk of the contest. 

Lake Elsinore Storm (Won 5-4 vs Ontario) (58-50 on the season)

Nu’u Contrades – 1-for-1, Walk-off RBI Single

Dawson Willis – 2-for-4, Home Run, Two RBI

Luis Maracara – 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 5 K (57 pitches – 30 strikes)

Lake Elsinore pulled off a two-run bottom-of-the-ninth rally to take a series win from Ontario. Luis Maracara started for the Storm, striking out five in three innings. Maracara allowed a three-run home run to Oswaldo Osorio in the first inning, which accounted for all three runs allowed by the Storm’s starter. Joseph Herrera allowed one unearned run in two innings, striking out two. Yoesmerli Beltre threw 2.1 scoreless innings on 31 pitches, 20 of which were strikes. Jordan Valenzuela earned the win with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

Dawson Willis hit a two-run home run in the third inning, tying the score at three. Willis had two hits from the leadoff spot and now has a .913 OPS in his first 29 games as a member of the Storm. Alex Conover continued to hit, as he picked up two hits and a walk. Jesmaylin Arias went 0-for-3 with a ninth-inning walk, after which he was replaced by Qrey Lott. Lott swiped second before Yimy Tovar walked. Truitt Madonna struck out for out number one, and with Jake Bold at the dish, Lake Elsinore went for the double steal. Ontario catcher Francisco Espinoza committed a throwing error on the stolen bases, allowing Lott to score the tying run. Tovar took third base before Bold was punched out for the second out of the inning. Facing Jecsua Laborius, Storm manager Brallan Perez called on Nu’u Contrades to pinch-hit for Dylan Grego. On a 2-2 count, Contrades blooped a raindrop of a single to shallow left field to score Tovar from third, closing out the series win with a walk-off hit.
