MILWAUKEE — Behind five strong innings from rookie Ryan Bergert and a go-ahead home run from Manny Machado, the San Diego Padres edged the Milwaukee Brewers 1–0 on Sunday afternoon. They claimed the rubber match and earned their MLB-leading 12th shutout of the season.

Bergert, a 24-year-old West Virginia product and San Diego’s No. 21 prospect, delivered again. He used a mix of fastballs and sliders to keep Milwaukee off balance. Through 5 1/3 innings, he allowed just one hit and four walks. He also struck out four while lowering his ERA to 1.26.

Meanwhile, Freddy Peralta was nearly untouchable through the first six innings. He relied heavily on his fastball and didn’t allow a hit until the seventh. Peralta struck out three and walked two on 90 pitches. His efficiency faded just as the Padres broke through.

In the top of the seventh, Manny Machado launched a 425-foot home run to left-center. The solo blast — his 10th of the season — came on a full count and gave San Diego a 1–0 lead. It was also the team’s second hit of the game (Tyler Wade broke up Peralta’s no-hit bid to lead off the 6th inning). Machado has now homered in four of his last seven games and continues to be a steady presence in the middle of the order. He tortured the Brewers this weekend amid the loudest boos he has experienced all season.

The Padres’ bullpen took over from there. Yuki Matsui escaped a sixth-inning, bases-loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts. Sean Reynolds and Wandy Peralta combined to handle the seventh. Jason Adam worked around trouble in the eighth. Milwaukee threatened after two singles. However, Adam struck out Andruw Monasterio to end the inning.

In the ninth, Suárez needed 17 pitches to retire the Brewers, sealing the win. He earned his MLB-best 21st save of the season.

Defensively, San Diego was sharp throughout. Xander Bogaerts made a key leaping catch on a line drive in the seventh, while Fernando Tatis Jr. helped turn a crucial double play in the third to erase a baserunner and keep the game scoreless.

“Very impressive across the board,” manager Mike Shildt said about his pitching staff after the game. “We pass the ball around (in the bullpen) and we are confident doing that.”

San Diego improved to 37–27 with the win, pulling within a half game of the NL West-leading Dodgers. Milwaukee fell to 35–31 and dropped to 6 games behind the NL Central-leading Cubs.

The Padres have now played 15 of their last 17 games decided by two runs or fewer, going 10–5 in that span.
