On Monday morning, Padres Chairman John Seidler announced that the team has reached an agreement on a multiyear contract extension with President of Baseball Operations and General Manager, A.J. Preller.
It had been reported, and even suggested by the man himself, that Preller wanted to finalize the roster before dealing with any personal contract negotiations. As the months flew by with spring training looming, debates started over whether or not this extension would happen, especially with a team sale on the horizon.
However, 48 hours after putting some final touches on his roster, the architect of the longest stretch of success in Padres history received his new contract. Preller is already the second-longest tenured head of baseball operations (12 years), behind Brian Cashman of the Yankees (28 years).
Seidler cites “A.J.’s skill and relentless commitment to winning” as the main reason the team is pleased to extend his contract. “Under his guidance, our organization has continued to invest in elite talent at both the major and minor league levels,” Seidler said.
The two parties remain verbally committed to a tireless pursuit of San Diego’s first World Series. One of Preller’s more notable signings brought him up yesterday.

Padres third baseman Manny Machado praised Preller for his acquisition of Nick Castellanos for a league minimum contract. “That deserves an extension for A.J.,” Machado said in a recent interview, via 93.7 the Fan.
The Padres have reached the playoffs in four of the last six seasons, and are off back-to-back 90-win years for the first time in franchise history. Preller’s reputation is for aggressive trade deadline deals and fearlessness in dealing prospects for current talent. That legacy is now set to continue for years to come.
Manager Craig Stammen, Chairman John Seidler, and CEO Erik Greupner will speak on Monday morning. Expect more details as the day progresses.
