Padres Down on the Farm: June 23 (Fabian homers in ACL/Franco’s strong start in DSL)

Padres minor league teams went 1-2 in regular season action to open the week.

El Paso Chihuahuas – Off Day
El Paso opens the second half with a home series against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Omar Cruz (0-4, 4.89 ERA) makes the start for El Paso.

San Antonio Missions – Off Day
San Antonio opens their second half in a six-game series against Midland, the first-half champs. San Antonio has not yet announced a starter, though Braden Nett (4-3, 3.58 ERA) is likely to start.
Fort Wayne TinCaps – Off Day
The TinCaps open a six-game home series against Great Lakes (LAD). No starter has been announced, though Ian Koenig (2-4, 6.65 ERA) is in line to start.
Lake Elsinore Storm – Off Day
The Storm open a home series against the Modesto Nuts in a California League championship rematch. Kannon Kemp (1-1, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to start, facing off with Modesto’s Aiden Butler (0-0, 2.57 ERA)
ACL Padres (Lost 11-8 vs ACL Royals) (10-28 on the season)
Albert Fabian – 2-for-5, Two-Run Home Run
Donte Grant – 2-for-3, Double, Sac Fly
Jesus Lopez – 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 K
In a high-scoring affair, the ACL Padres dropped their game by an 11-8 final. Albert Fabian continues to hit, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI double and a two-run home run. Fabian continues to deliver while on a rehab assignment and is hitting .349 with a .962 OPS this season. Donte Grant had two hits, including a double, while also driving in a run on a sacrifice fly. Jesmaylin Arias and Yoiber Ocopio each had a sac fly in the game. Gustavo Marquez had an RBI double out of the no. 9 spot in the lineup, also stealing a base. Kale Fountain had a single and an RBI while stealing his ninth base of the season.
Jesus Lopez allowed three runs in two innings as the team’s starter. Lopez struck out three batters in his outing, while walking just one. Elvis Reyes tossed two innings of one-run baseball, and Alejandro Lugo threw two innings of two-run baseball in relief, not recording a strikeout. Hard-throwing right-hander Jordan Valenzuela took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings, with one of those runs scoring on a three-run home run by Manuel German on a middle-middle pitch off Yovannki Pascual.
DSL Padres Gold (Lost 4-1 vs DSL Astros Blue) (9-6 on the season)
Eduarlin Tejeda – 1-for-1, Single, Three Walks
Jhoan De La Cruz – 1-for-4, RBI Single
Rordy Mejia – 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K
The DSL Padres Gold opened the week with a close-game loss to the DSL Astros Blue. Rordy Mejia allowed two runs in four innings of work, striking out two. Edwyn Hernandez went 2.2 innings of one-run baseball in long relief, walking two and striking out one. Angel Sanchez allowed one run in 1.1 innings of work, and Florangel Vasquez tossed a scoreless ninth.
At the plate, the Padres Gold were only able to scratch across one run, with that run coming on Jhoan De La Cruz’s RBI single in the eighth inning. Eduarlin Tejeda reached base four times in the ball game, drawing three walks and hitting a single while scoring the team’s lone run. Kevin Tamburini had two singles in four trips to the plate, and Moises Valdez was 1-for-2 after coming on as a pinch-hitter.
DSL Padres Brown (Won 3-0 vs DSL Royals Fortuna) (8-6 on the season)
Dayquer Alfonzo – 1-for-3, RBI Double
Tom Guerrero – 1-for-3, Double, Run Scored
Oliver Franco – 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
A quality start from Oliver Franco allowed the Padres Brown to take a 3-0 lead after four innings, and the bullpen held the game at that, securing a 3-0 Padres Brown win. Franco tossed four innings in the game, allowing four hits and no runs. He struck out four batters while walking two, inducing a clutch double play in the first inning. Cristian Navarro earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning, and Jeuris Guzman closed out the game with two scoreless innings to earn his first professional save.
The Padres Gold recorded four hits, but enough came in a three-run fourth inning. Tom Guerrero and Dayquer Alfonzo led off the inning with back-to-back doubles, giving the Padres Brown a 1-0 lead. Darian Castillo singled to move Alfonzo to third, and Alfonzo scored on a Juan Martinez groundout. Castillo moved into scoring position on the groundout, stole third base, and scored the team’s third run on a groundout from Kaden Hernandez. Endy Rios had a bunt hit in the fourth inning, with his hit being the last the team had in the game.
