Padres affiliates went 1-4 on Saturday.

El Paso Chihuahuas (Lost 8-3 vs Sugar Land) (41-53 on the season)

Mason McCoy – 1-for-4, Double, Run Scored

Nick Solak – 1-for-4, Single, RBI

Evan Fitterer – 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 K (75 pitches – 39 strikes)

El Paso let a 3-2 lead get away late, as the Chihuahuas’ bullpen allowed six runs. Evan Fitterer allowed two runs in four-plus innings, striking out one batter. The right-hander picked up nine ground ball out and has posted a ground ball rate of 72.7% in Triple-A this season to lead the PCL. Misael Tamarez took the loss, allowing a go-ahead two-run home run in the sixth inning. Andrew Moore allowed two runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings of relief, walking three. Justin Yeager struck out three in 1.2 innings, giving up two runs. Mason McCoy went 1-for-4 with a double in the game, scoring the team’s first run of the game on a wild pitch. Dustin Harris reached base three times, scoring one run in the game. Will Wagner drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk, and Nick Solak drove in a run with a fifth-inning groundout. Romeo Sanabria and Anthony Vilar each had a base hit in the loss.

San Antonio Missions (Lost 5-2 vs Corpus Christi) (41-48 on the season)

Jake Cunningham – 2-for-3, Two Singles, RBI

Albert Fabian – 1-for-3, Single, Walk, Two Stolen Bases

Ian Koenig – 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K (71 pitches – 46 strikes)

Missions starter Ian Koenig threw the team’s second straight quality start, pitching six shutout innings. The right-hander from San Jose struck out five batters, picking off a baserunner and inducing a double play. It was just the kind of outing the right-hander needed after his last two outings, and if Koenig pitches like he did tonight, he could be a boost for a Missions team looking to make noise in the second half. The bullpen allowed five runs in three innings. Clay Edmondson allowed a walk and a single in one-third of an inning, and both runners bequeathed scored on base hits from the Hooks against Harry Gustin. Tucker Musgrove pitched 1.2 innings, recording all five outs on strikeouts. However, he also allowed a two-run home run to Walker Janek in the eighth. Bernard Jose picked up the final out on a groundout.

Jake Cunningham had two hits in the game for the Missions, driving in one of their two runs. Cunningham hit two singles, scoring Kai Roberts in the eighth inning. Albert Fabian reached base on a single and a walk, picking up two stolen bases in the game. Fabian, not known for his speed, has yet to be caught stealing this season. Braedon Karpathios went 1-for-4 with a single in the game and has now hit safely in his last six games. Francisco Acuna reached twice in the loss and is hitting .273/.455/.424 in July.  

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Won 2-0 in 11 innings vs Lansing) (37-51 on the season)

Justin DeCriscio – 1-for-5, Double, Run Scored

Zach Evans – 1-for-4, Single

Kash Mayfield – 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K (30 pitches – 19 strikes)

Fort Wayne’s second half kicked off with an extra-inning win over the Lansing Lugnuts. Due to the postponement of Friday’s game, the TinCaps had an extra-rested pitching staff, and they proceeded to use it. Kash Mayfield started for the TinCaps, pitching two scoreless innings on 30 pitches. Mayfield struck out one while walking one. Carson Montgomery pitched a scoreless third inning in relief, stranding two baserunners. Bryan Balzer, the team’s projected starter, pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out three against one walk. Balzer generated seven whiffs to lead the TinCaps’ staff. Igor Gil struck out three batters in two scoreless innings, keeping the Lugnuts off the board. Will Varmette pitched the ninth and tenth innings without allowing a run. The right-hander touched 98 miles per hour and struck out one batter, and has pitched to a 1.80 ERA in his last 10 outings. Clark Candiotti and his splitter earned the save, stranding the tying runs in scoring position.

Lamar King Jr and Zach Evans picked up the TinCaps’ only hits in regulation, both with singles. The TinCaps struck first in the 11th inning, as after a forceout at third base off the bat of Kasen Wells, Justin DeCriscio doubled to put the go-ahead run on third. Ryan Wideman hit a chopper to shortstop, where Ali Camarillo looked home before throwing to first for the sure out. Wells was on the move upon contact and scored the first run. Alex McCoy then worked a walk, but the 3-2 pitch was wild, allowing DeCriscio to score from third.

Lake Elsinore Storm (Lost 9-4 vs Ontario) (46-43 on the season)

Bradley Frye – 1-for-2, Single, RBI, Three Walks

Dylan Grego – 1-for-3, Single, Two RBI

Lan-Hong Su – 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K (6 pitches – 5 strikes)

Tyler Schmitt – 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 4 K (70 pitches – 51 strikes)

Lake Elsinore fell behind after three innings, dropping their Saturday game by a 9-4 final. Lan-Hong Su started for the Storm, though he was scheduled to not pitch deep. Su pitched a 1-2-3 first inning on six pitches. Zack Qin threw one inning in relief, allowing one run on two hits. Tyler Schmitt, the Storm’s usual Saturday starter, pitched in relief for the first time since pitching behind Lucas Giolito, striking out four batters in five innings. Schmitt allowed five runs on eight hits, generating eight whiffs. Jordan Valenzuela allowed two runs (one earned) in one-plus inning, and Sean Barnett was charged with one run in two-thirds of an inning, striking out two. Carson Swilling struck out his lone batter faced in the eighth inning. 

The Storm picked up six hits and walked eight times, but went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Bradley Frye singled to score the Storm’s first run, also drawing three walks. Dylan Grego picked up two RBI in the game, scoring Alcides Hernandez. Jorge Quintana went 1-for-4 with an RBI single, scoring George Bilecki. Grego’s eighth-inning single scored the Storm’s fourth and final run of the game. Dawson Willis went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk in the contest. 

ACL Padres (Lost 6-3 vs ACL White Sox) (31-25 on the season)

Luis De Leon – 1-for-3, Home Run, RBI

Ty Harvey – 1-for-3, Double, Run Scored

Marco Eluscat – 2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 2 K

The ACL Padres saw starter Marco Eluscat for the last two innings, allowing three runs. Eluscat struck out two batters while walking none, a sign of progress for him in the Complex level. Eluscat and batterymate Ty Harvey both struggled with managing the White Sox’s running game, allowing four stolen bases in the first two innings. Jose Leclerc struck out the side in a scoreless third inning and is likely nearing the end of his rehab window. Ryan Reed allowed three runs in 1.2 innings of relief, picking up two strikeouts as well. Dariel Polanco allowed one hit in 1.1 innings, striking out two batters. Luis De Leon hit the team’s only home run of the game, a solo shot in the fifth inning to put the team on the board. Isaac Ponce doubled in a three-hit effort, driving in a run in the seventh inning. Ty Harvey doubled in the seventh inning, scoring on a batted ball off the bat of Santiago Vargas. The Padres actually faced former Padre prospect Drew Thorpe in this game, with Eddson Martinez picking up their lone hit against the Cal Poly alum.
