The Padres looked to get back in the win column after dropping the final two games of the series in Francisco.

Randy Vasquez looked to snatch the momentum back for San Diego. The Brewers countered with rookie Chad Patrick.

The Padres were able to summon just enough offense to complement a strong outing from the pitching staff to notch a series-opening win.

Vasquez wasn’t as fine-tuned as other previous starts. Yet, he pitched out of danger several times. Walks plagued him again, as he issued four free passes in 4 2/3 innings. However, he did not allow a run and yielded just two hits.

One of those key moments occurred in the second inning, when Vasquez got Caleb Durbin to ground into a double play to end the inning with runners on first and third.

Wandy Peralta relieved Vasquez before he could fulfill five innings, after 78 laborious pitches.

The Padres opened the top of the third with back-to-back singles by unlikely sources of Tyler Wade and Martin Maldonado.  Luis Arraez notched the RBI single to open the scoring and give San Diego a slim 1-0 lead.

The Padres threatened again in the top of the seventh. Maldonado lined a double to give them runners on second and third with one out. With Fernando Tatis Jr. coming up, it looked like an ideal spot for the Padres to give themselves a cushion.

Instead, the current struggles of Tatis were on full display. In a hapless at-bat, he struck out. Over the last 30 games, Tatis has just a .187 batting average. Arraez grounded out to end the fruitless threat.

It looked like the Padres were headed to the later innings with an uncomfortable 1-0 lead. Manny Machado then provided a little breathing room with a solo shot in the eighth, his ninth of the year and third in his last seven games.

Vasquez, plus a bullpen armada of Peralta, Jeremiah Estrada, Adrian Morejon, and Robert Suarez, pieced together a shutout of the talented Brewers lineup. Estrada and Morejon both went longer than one inning. Suarez notched his MLB-high 20th save, as the Padres came out with a tight 2-0 victory.
