San Diego FC host Vancouver Whitecaps for first place battle

San Diego FC will host its second consecutive home game at Snapdragon Stadium this Saturday, July 19, against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
SDFC hosted Toronto FC during the week and suffered a surprising 1-0 loss in front of over 23 thousand fans.
With that loss, San Diego is still top of the MLS Western Conference, but that first-place position is on the line against Vancouver. The Canadian team is just one point behind SDFC and would regain the first-place spot with a win at Snapdragon Stadium.
San Diego has had a busy start to the new transfer window, losing both Milan Iloski and Jasper Loffelsend. Mikey Varas’ team was also able to sign young fullback Aiden Harangi on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt. Sporting Director Tyler Heaps confirmed that the club is still considering several players as potential signings this window, but also reminded the press that the Designated Player spot cannot be utilized.
Milan Iloski’s absence was certainly felt in the frustrating loss to Toronto, with little to no production from San Diego’s offensive line. Tomas Angel started the game as the main striker for Mikey Varas and no shots in 60 minutes played.

Without Iloski and with Marcus Ingvartsen injured, offensive options are very slim for coach Varas. Hirving Lozano came off the bench against Toronto and made an immediate impact, as it would be surprising not to see him as a starter against Vancouver.
This was San Diego’s second loss in the last three games, but it was wildly different than the loss against Houston. San Diego was able to produce plenty of offense against Houston, but was almost completely dormant against Toronto.
The inconsistencies of this frontline have been evident throughout this season, particularly in the main striker role. Anders Dreyer and Hirving Lozano have been very productive, but Varas is yet to find that central striker to complete the puzzle.
Vancouver is coming off a dominant 3-0 win against the Houston Dynamo away from home, but is also on a bit of an inconsistent run. The Canadian team has won just two of its last six league games, with four losses.
Opponents have outscored Vancouver 13-8 in this run, but this last win against Houston has the potential to make a shift. Brian White scored in this game in Texas for his team-leading 11th goal of the 2025 campaign.
Sebastian Berhalter also scored to continue his very productive season from the midfield with two goals and four assists.
Apart from the exciting offense, Vancouver’s backline has proven to be a tough task for many opponents. Especially with all-star goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka in between the sticks.
SDFC was able to put five goals past Takaoka the last time the two teams faced each other, with Milan Iloski contributing four of those goals. It will be very interesting to see if the offense can produce anything close to that this time around without Iloski, but with the home-field advantage.
