Ian Pilcher equalized the game in the 79th minute for San Diego to salvage a point against a talented Vancouver Whitecaps FC team, and remain at the top of the table.
Vancouver (12-5-6, 42 points) scored the match’s first goal before halftime, but shorthanded San Diego (13-7-4, 43 points) remained relentless the entire night. San Diego had nine more shot attempts than the Whitecaps and held 61.8% possession.
“We just kept pushing,” San Diego FC head coach Mikey Varas said postgame. “I know it’s a 1-1 tie, but for me it feels like a win because I feel like it was a dominant performance, especially the second half.”
Saturday night at Snapdragon Stadium featured a showdown between the top two teams in the Western Conference. The Chrome and Azul entered tonight’s match leading the table by one point, despite a home loss to Toronto FC on Wednesday. A penalty kick from Theo Corbeanu in the 20th minute was the decider.
Meanwhile, the Canadian team is coming off a dominant three-nil win over the Houston Dynamo FC. Emmanuel Sabbi scored four minutes into the match, Sebastian Berhalter netted one before halftime, and Brian White scored his 11th goal of the season to seal the victory.

In their previous encounter on June 25, Milan Iloski had an impressive first start, scoring four goals in just 12 minutes to lead San Diego to a 5-3 victory in enemy territory. This performance by the Escondido native was a standout moment for the new club. Iloski was the team’s second-leading scorer with 10 goals before the mutual termination of his loan on Tuesday.
Mikey Varas faced a challenging situation tonight due to several injuries and recent departures. SDFC included their first overall pick from the MLS SuperDraft, Manu Duah, along with Ian Pilcher, as their starting center backs. They stepped in for Paddy McNair and Christopher McVey, who are both sidelined with lower-body injuries. The average age of the starting backline tonight is only 20 years old.
Midfielder Anibal Godoy, forward Marcus Ingvartsen, and defender Willy Kumado were also unavailable for this match. San Diego had only six substitutes available, two of whom were goalkeepers.
Pablo Sisniega started in place of CJ dos Santos, who is still recovering from an injury.
One minute into the match, Vancouver’s attack began early, with White attempting a shot from the top left of the box—his attempt went wide to the left of the post.
San Diego’s first legitimate offensive attempt came in the 16th minute. As SDFC moved near the left sideline, Anders Dreyer found himself with plenty of space on the right wing and began jumping up and down to get the attention of his teammates.
When he received the ball, Dreyer cut inside and aimed to connect with the sprinting Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. The pass was placed in the center of the box, but it was just out of Lozano’s reach.
In the first 20 minutes, Vancouver had several attacking opportunities, but San Diego dominated possession. Dreyer took a shot from just outside the box, but All-Star goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka made a crucial save, fully extending to block the attempt with his right hand.
A minute later, Lozano took a free kick in the opponent’s half. His kick found its way into a crowded box, where Takaoka momentarily dropped the ball, nearly creating a disaster for the Whitecaps.
Shortly after, Luca de la Torre attempted a long-range shot that sailed just over the right goal post. In the 34th minute, Vancouver substituted their captain defender, Ranko Veselinovic, due to an injury, bringing on Belal Halbouni in his place.
Lozano’s first shot attempt of the match was blocked. During a fast break, Édier Ocampo had a powerful shot, but Sisniega was ready and made an impressive save.
The first goal of the match came in the 40th minute. Vancouver’s Berhalter delivered a long pass to Ocampo. After taking two dribbles, Ocampo shot the ball while being pressured by two San Diego defenders. Sisniega managed to make a diving save, but the ball rolled towards Mathías Laborda of the Whitecaps.
Laborda was in the right place at the right time and successfully put the ball in the net. There wasn’t much the goalkeeper could do in that situation. Duah was credited with an own goal.

San Diego entered halftime on the brink of losing consecutive home games.
Trailing by one goal, the home team began the second half with a determined attack. Just three minutes in, Dreyer’s left-footed shot from outside the box was blocked. This attempt led to a corner kick, where Jeppe Tverskov headed the ball but missed the target.

About 15 minutes into the half, de la Torre’s shot from the left side of the box was also blocked by Takaoka.
The referees reviewed a potential handball penalty that could have given San Diego a prime opportunity to equalize the game. However, the VAR decision concluded that it was not a handball, resulting in loud boos from the crowd.
In the 76th minute, White managed to evade a closing defender from SDFC and attempted a challenging shot from the left side that rolled just past the posts. This was a missed opportunity for the Whitecaps to secure an insurance goal.
San Diego had been pressing hard throughout the match, recording 13 shot attempts. They were desperately seeking to salvage at least a point in front of a home crowd of 27,418 fans.
That moment came in the 79th minute.
The play started with Dreyer taking a corner kick. A Whitecaps defender cleared the ball, but Bombino, who received it, lost possession. Pilcher seized the moment and, without hesitation, fired a left-footed shot from the center of the box, sending the ball into the top left corner.
Vancouver’s goalkeeper had no time to react. This was Pilcher’s first MLS goal.
“The goal was phenomenal,” Pilcher said about the late equalizer.

Down the stretch, Lozano and Tverskov had attempts at goal to no avail. Eight minutes of extra time were added. In the dying moments of the match, Sisnigega continued his strong night with saves and was a key player in securing the tie.
“These last three games have been special for me,” Sisniega said about getting this opportunity. “I’ve been working very hard for the last six months.”
Varas was asked after the game if there was a competition for the goalkeeper position between Sisniega and dos Santos. He said that the squad embraces competition, which will benefit the team by bringing out the best in each player.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing San Diego to maintain its position as the top team in the Western Conference with 43 points. This result was positive for SDFC, as they managed to tie against a talented opponent that features four all-stars. It also served as a morale boost after losing one of its best players via loan and their loss on Wednesday.
San Diego FC missed several key players tonight against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Head coach Mikey Varas was impressed by his team’s gritty performance and praised the young backline.

The new club is viewed as the team to beat in the conference. San Diego’s Sporting Director, Tyler Heaps, will be tasked with adding depth to the squad when the secondary transfer window opens on Thursday, July 24, and will close on August 21.
There’s been a handful of injuries and departures this month. Midfielder Alejandro Alvarado Jr. and defender Andrés Reyes sustained season-ending injuries. Defender Jasper Löffelsend and, as previously mentioned, Iloski, are no longer with the club.
Adding a striker to pair up with Dreyer and Lozano would elevate the dynamic attack.
Three San Diego players were selected for the 2025 All-Star team. Forwards Dreyer and Lozano, and captain midfielder Jeppe Tverskov will represent the MLS against LIGA MX’s best this Wednesday, July 23, in Texas. Dreyer will compete in the skills challenge on Tuesday.
San Diego will have another home match on Friday, July 25, against one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, Nashville SC (14-5-5, 47 points). The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PST.
