In the second game of a pivotal stretch for the team from San Diego, the Friars used a mix of old and new players in the lineup and bullpen to get a second straight win over their division rivals
The Offense
Robbie Ray started for the San Francisco Giants. He did not have his greatest stuff in this outing.
The San Diego Padres opened up the scoring in the top of the first on a balk while Jackson Merrill was at the plate, allowing Manny Machado to score. Machado has been huge for the Padres’ offense all season long.
The Giants tied it later on thanks to Wilmer Flores, but the score didn’t stay tied for long.
Jose Iglesias, who usually plays in the field, was the DH Tuesday night. He hit his first home run as a Friar to score Ramon Laureano and give the Friars a 3-1 lead.

Who would have thought.
Jake Cronenworth tacked on with an RBI single in the fourth inning, scoring Laureano. That was enough to give the Padres a commanding lead.
Though, Merrill wasn’t done adding on as he hit a towering solo shot in the top of the 8th.

The Friars’ offense showed up and took the first two games of the series at Oracle Park.
On The Bump
In his second start in the Brown and Gold, Nestor Cortes went 4 2/3 innings giving up six hits and one run with six strikeouts. While he rarely threw above 92mph, Cortes mixed in a wide range of pitches routinely getting easy outs for the defense. His mixture of four seamers, cutters, and changeups kept the Giants off balance throughout the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, manager Mike Shildt went to the super-pen starting with David Morgan. Morgan got Willy Adames to strike out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth. Morgan would then get into trouble in the next inning leading to the bases loaded with one out.
Shildt then called on Jason Adam who ended the threat with two quick pop outs and pitched a quick seventh inning. Adrian Morejon pitched a scoreless 8th and Robert Suarez finished off the ninth for a Padres win.
Ray went six innings allowing seven hits, four runs, and he struck out four. The Padres repeatedly forced Ray to throw far more pitches per inning than Cortes, with many at bats lasting at least seven pitches. As such he was at 82 pitches in only the fourth inning.
The teams will conclude their three game series at San Francisco Bay tomorrow afternoon at 12:45pm as Nick Pivetta will go against Kai-Weng Tang.
To make matters even better, the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night to win the series. Why is this important? The Padres and Dodgers are now tied atop the NL West with a 68-52 record.
