BREAKING: Casey Mize traded to Padres from Tigers

At the start of the MLB trade deadline day, the San Diego Padres acquired rotational help by trading for Robbie Ray of the San Francisco Giants. Then, Padres received more help by trading for Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers.

At the buzzer, it was announced by Jon Heyman first that the 2018 number one pick was being traded from Detroit to San Diego. Then it was further announced that the Padres also acquired Gage Workman in exchange for former first-round pick Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, both pitchers. Mayfield is the Padres’ No. 2 prospect.

In 16 starts, Mize has a 4-6 record with a 2.70 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in 16 starts. Mize spent his entire career with the Tigers since being drafted and made it into the majors two years after being drafted. His best season was in 2025, when he set career highs in wins, games started and strikeouts as well as making his first All-Star Game. He will be a free agent at the end of the year.
Workman is ranked as Detroit’s #30 prospect back in 2023. The left-handed hitter who has played third, shortstop and the outfield. He’s primarily a backup, having only played 38 games at most last year for Detroit and batting .158, though he seems to have good pop and a very strong arm. His minor-league numbers are much better.
Mayfield was drafted in the first round in 2024 out of Edmond, OK, as a high school left-handed pitcher. The 6’4 “, 200 lb pitcher has gone 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA this season. Jackson Wolf is a minor league arm that has been traded and acquired multiple times by the Padres, his only MLB appearance with the Padres was against the Tigers.
